Nokia 5800 new software release update

5800We receive information that Nokia has released or will be releasing a new software update for your lovely Nokia 5800. The news just came out today and Nokia claims that it will further improve the phone's performance and new functionalities will be added.

Noticed that I also said will be releasing, because when I read the article it sound like it has been released and already available for update. First thing came in to my mind is, which version is affected, Europe, NAM, India, or what? Also I checked and nothing about the firmware was mentioned. So I immediately tried the OTA update, and of course "no update available". I connected my PC suite, which I was asked to update my "software updater", after that it says. No updates available. Still showing available V20. It made me think that maybe there are only informing us of the future updates coming up soon.
According to the press release, it will improve Internet download and the interface would be faster. Better in-device search, hopefully faster. Also  better email experience. Here are the some of the additional feature that should be included on the update:

Theme: Mystic 5th by PiZero for Nokia 5800

screenshot0057Here is another theme. This one really caught my attention. I personally like pictures of skies. I think background skies for Nokia 5800 is really nice to look at, especially if the picture is taken or created in hi-resolution. This theme Mystic by PiZero is one of those.

I'll start of with the main screen. The blue midnight sky really blends in with the green aurora that mirrors through the water. The rock formation is quite okay. It could have been a little brighter. The clock icon is really simple but it really says sophistication. The digital clock is quite all right too. When you are on the menu the background is the same as the wallpaper but its blurry which makes it look like you are looking at the icons right in front of you and the backgrounds is out far.

screenshot0058The icons are the same as the default. I noticed that the scroll on the right has a strike making it look like it's being divided, I don't know the purpose of it, but I guess it's ok. The tabs under messaging and contacts are working great, those are important to me. Somehow if the tabs are not included in the theme, that part won't work at all, that's why I always check. The keyboards are ok both Full screen and alphanumeric. Mini QWERTY and handwriting is none functional. I'm not sure if the creator forgot about it.

Nokia 5800 App Review: SMS timer

screenshot0055Another application that I want to mention is SMS timer. Some people, like myself might take this app for granted. However I found out that having this app installed in your phone gives you a few advantages.

SMS timer is just as simple as scheduling your text messages for future send. You might think that you don't need this app, think again. This app can schedule Birthday greeting to relatives and friends. You might remember their anniversary today but you want to make sure that you send them a quick text to show that you really care. Just to cover your back, use SMS timer. You can even schedule it by the minute of that day. Interface is quick and easy to get use to.

Nokia 5800 App Review: SmartMovie

screenshot0050I recently did a quick review of SmartMovie application. I encountered some issues and unable to play any files. Since then, Lonely Cat Games already release a new update to the app. Version 4.10. I finally got it to work and I think I should share this with everyone.

screenshot0051I want to start right after the install. You have to unlock the app and the converter. Right after you unlock the mobile app, go back to the tools and select unlock converter, assuming that you already installed the converter in your computer, get the code from the converter under register, and put it on the unlock converter portion of your mobile, it will generate another code to put in your converter.

screenshot0053I was able to test different kinds of files like 3GP, AVI, DiVx, and MP4. I was able to play them successfully. Although I see some delay on the sounds from the 3GP that I recorded from my phone. This application will work better if you use the converter. I tried to play an episode that I like in full 300MB file and was able to play without converting it, with little delay and can be considered ok. But it's much better to use the converter before playing it on the app.

The browser for your files is really easy to use, you can have the app scan or rescan your files to check all your media files. Just a warning, when scanning makes sure don't do anything else because it slows down the phone. When I was scanning, I received a call, and after the call the phone restarted, made me think that it run out of RAM. One of the things that I really like is to be able to browse the movie and see the part of the movie in a small screen while deciding which part to watch. Another thing is, it rotates and can be played portrait or landscape. I also want to mention that this app supports subtitle to the language of your choice, which is very good. Everything else in the app is pretty much like any other video player and the interface can be easily get use to and very user-friendly.

Nokia 5800 App Review: ScreenSnap

scr000001Another application that is compatible with Nokia 5800 is ScreenSnap. When we use our phone everyday, you will never know when you're going to need a snap shot of your phone. It is nice to have that option. ScreenSnap works like a print screen on windows. It captures whatever is in your screen. I use it when I go online and I need to make a note of something. I zoom in to the screen and take a snap using this app. It usually is handy if you find something on a website and you want to take a picture of the item for future reference. You can do a lot with this app and just use your imagination.

First you have to load the application, in order to use it. Interface is really easy to use. It starts with the shortcut key, which is defaulted to camera and I think you just better of leaving it like that, since you don't have any other option. You also have selections of file type that you want to save it to which it's defaulted to JPEG. Another option is action, if you want to save the image or send the image. The other options are focused for the file itself; the start name of your file, where to store, memory card or phone memory and which folder name to use. The file is defaulted to save to memory card, image folder under ScreenSnap folder.

When I first heard of such app, I told myself I'm not going to need that. Now I have been using it every time I need a screen shot of my phone for my blog. It's amazing what technology can do now. Overall, ScreenSnap is a good application for screen shots. It does the job and very handy. Not to mention it's also free.

If you want to download the application go to this site.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Mobbler

screenshot0049A device like Nokia 5800 is a music player pack with everything that we need for an everyday life adventure. All the stuff that it can do, plus once in a while, you can make phone calls too. An application like Mobbler takes advantage of the stuff that Nokia 5800 can do.

Mobbler is a player for all your favorite radio station. You need to get a log in, in order to start using the app. I created an account through last.fm. Once you put your user and password, it will connect online and should be ready for use. The interface is good, very-user friendly, basic icons that you see on your music player. You can start by going to options, and start new station. Type an artist or a song, whichever you prefer. It can search by tags or recommended. Once a song is playing you can click the heart icon to add song to Loved Tracks, which I think they should've called favorites. You can also select the ghostbuster sign or stop sign if you want to ban the track for future playing. Another icon on the interface is the red mobbler icon, which takes you to an Amazon website if you like to purchase the track that you're listening to. It also shows the album picture of the song, if there is any.

Mobbler can be played using 2G(EDGE), 3G, and even WiFi. I tested 2G, it was able to play ok, but if you're moving and switching between networks, it pauses once in a while. 3G is much better of course, although it drains more battery, we all know that. WiFi is the best, especially if you're at home, no problem with connection whatsoever.

All in all, Mobbler is an online radio station you can take anywhere you go. When you have it installed on your phone, it really feels like a music center. The best part is it's a freeware.

If you like to ask a question or if you have a comment, or something that you discovered, go to our forum here. We just hit over 2000 users and counting.
