Latest blog entry
There has already been a post on Ovi store on this blog right? Well, that post was more of an announcement and a small review of ovi store client on 5800. Now its been like 5 days since ovi store worldwide lauch and each of these 5 days, I have been browsing around ovi store. Lets see how people across the world responded to this launch and my personal experiences with ovi store for the last 5 days.
Launch
I was kinda lucky to be in one of the countries (Australia, Ireland, Singapore and Spain) where ovi store was soft launched a few hours before the world wide launch. By soft launch I mean the ovi store client was fully functional whereas the web version of ovi store (store.ovi.com) was not yet functional then. This was when things were running smoothly: I could browse around the store without having to wait for the pages to load and make payments for the paid applications. I thought I will come back later to buy some paid applications but I didn't know the wait would last this long, for the payment option has not been working ever since ovi store went online worldwide. Nokia has come under heavy criticism with this from the likes of techcrunch, who labeled ovi launch as an epic failure. Such was the outrage from the blogging community that Nokia Finland even rendered a public apology to pacify the irate users.

Well its been cool apps all the way ever since Ovi was launched a few days ago. If Qik left you totally bowled over and eyeCall made you the coolest person at the party table, check this out, Searchme will definitely make you the coolest surfer/browser in your group. You would have probably heard of searchme for it was taunted to be the google killer many a times since last year when it was still in its beta stage. Searchme has come a long way since then, launching clients on all the popular mobile platforms including apple, android and symbian besides providing a mobile version of their search engine. Let see how it fares on our Nokia 5800s.
Installation
I am really starting to enjoy Ovi store for now I dont have to prowl on net looking for cool applications for my 5800. All I have to do is just open the ovi client on my 5800 and download an interesting application. I have been seeing searchme in the recommended section of ovi store ever since it was launched and only today did I get a chance to download this application. So there you go, either you can directly download Searchme from ovi client on your phone or you can download from ovi store on your desktop before transferring it your 5800. I just checked there is now even a mobile version of ovi store in case you have not been able download ovi client on your 5800s. Download and installation should take around 15 s on wi-fi as this a pretty small but awesome package.
After being completely bowled over by qik the other day, I was hunting for a suitable app to follow up for reviewing on my 5800. Qik may be in the top of the list of coolest applications available on symbian platform today but not to be left far behind is this another cool application from the benches of eyeSight. Lets see how cool this application really is and how well it fares on our 5800s.
Installation
eyeCall is available as a paid application on the ovi store but as you guys must have realised by now, the payment option in ovi store is not working ever since it opened its floodgates to the whole world. I mean it was perfectly functional when I reviewed ovi client on 5800 when it was soft launched in a selected few countries. A few hours later when it was launched worldwide, payment option seized to work, blame it on the traffic surge! I came across this application while browsing through the ovi store and was totally drawn by its features after going through the item description. I didnt let the payment faux in ovi store deter me and found a beta version of the app on mobicreed. As you may guess, a beta application will probably be unsigned and it was indeed, prompting me to sign the app using the method described in my earlier post.Ovi payment is working now! Well, now I was all set to get a feel of eyeCall on my 5800.
Sometime ago we spoke here at the website about the Invisible Shield for the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music:
Well, Invisible Shield was made to protect your phone from every single scratch or dent, it is not a single cover that you buy on a Chinese Store, it is a lot more that that, it is an invisible shield indeed, that can covers only your screen or even all the 5800 phone, that’s why it is made as ONLY “Screen Protector” or even “Full Body Cover”. Those are available at Zagg.

It indeed worked very well for those who bought the shield. A visitor from our network posted a comment regarding the Invisible Shield protection, and notice below in his quote that if he hadn't the invisible shield his phone would get at least lot of scratches:
I put the invisible shield on my 5800 right when I purchased it. A couple of days ago I was racing my boys to the car while my 5800was in the inside pocket of my jacket and the running bounced my Nokia out of the pocket and on to the asphalt of the parking lot. The Nokia 5800 hit the ground and slid for a few feet and the impact sent the back cover flying.
To my surprise, I couldn’t find even a little scratch after examining my phone.
Ryan
If you prefer not to protect the 5800 with an invisible shield you can always get a case to fully cover your Nokia 5800.
Indeed, an invisible shield for the storm is a must have and for today and tomorrow there's a special discount of 50%. So, if you want to buy this shields, the screen cover or the full body protector, act until 29th May 2009, after that the price will double. All you need to do to get this discount is to follow this link and to use this coupon code: memday09.

I was shortlisting applications to review today and thats when I realised that we haven't reviewed one of the coolest applications available on the symbian platform today. Yeah, the coolest! It goes by a small but very apt name, QIK but dont judge it by its short name, the feature set it offers are gargantuan. Let me not waste more words here and straightaway dwell into the review of qik on Nokia 5800.
MyPhone has been living up to its catch phrase of "exceeding iphone" as was seen in our review of myphone v2.10 on Nokia 5800. But the folks at MMMOOO are not happy with just this as they want to make it better and smoother on our Nokia 5800s. MMMOOO announced yesterday on their blog that they will be updating their best selling application, MyPhone to v2.11 on 28th May 2009 (thats tomorrow, I cant wait for these hours to slip by). Our readers just got lucky for our contest will now be giving away 10 licenses of the latest MyPhone v2.11 in lieu of v2.10 as was previously mentioned in the contest.
What are the changes in v2.11? Well, expect major improvements in the interface and usability of the application for Jonah, blogger at MMMOOO has done a Armstrong's (not Lance, but Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on man) feat by proclaiming v.211 to be "a little bit upgrade from the v2.10, actually it's a leap to MyPhone". One of the major complaints with myphone v2.10 has been the complexity of adding a third party application in the Myphone menu, which had to be manually done using an external taskman program. Developers of myphone have fixed this nagging issue in v2.11. Some of the other major fixes as per the official changelog of v2.11 are:
- A larger pool of wallpapers to chose from (one of them highlighted in the screenshot above)
- Swifter and more fluidlike or should I say Iphone like experience with several bugs fixed
- Support for third party applications links and delete icon added
- Addition of "hold and drag" menu for that improved touch feeling
We see that our favourite application just got better (almost, for it will be out in a few hours from now). So go ahead and grab a license of MyPhone v2.11 when its launched tomorrow or if you want to gamble with your luck, wait for 31st May to see if you made it in our contest. You can also check here the review of the MyPhone 2.10.
P.S- All the users of previous versions of Myphone will be eligible for the free upgrade to v2.11. So just wait for a few hours and your myphone will be closer to "EXCEEDING IPHONE". Until then check the MMMOOO blog entry for some screenshots of MyPhone v2.11.
When you upgrade your Nokia 5800 firmware to v20.0.0.12, Dictionary is a free application that comes with it. This powerful yet simple-to-use application contains an extensive English word set that literally puts an entire dictionary inside your Nokia 5800.
Upon touching the nicely done icon, the application asks you if you want to download more languages. In choosing "Yes", your Nokia internet browser is launched and you are taken to the website where you can download 42 different language packs such as Chinese, Croatian, French, German and Korean. The Dictionary application also serves as a language translator which is perfect when you are in need of translating during trip abroad. Just choose your source language (for example - "English) and your target language (for example - "Italian") and it will show the definition of the word and the translation. The application lets you install up to two (2) language packs. You can download and install the files directly using the Nokia Internet browser or via PC using the Nokia PC Suite.
Using this free Nokia 5800 app is very simple. Touch the text box and your text input interface of choice will appear. Type in the word and the application will search for it in its database. If you just type in a few letters, the Dictionary app will show all the words with the same letter sequence. For example, if you type it "crea", the words creak, creakiness and cream. Just scroll down using the bar at the right of the screen to browse through. This is great especially if you have forgotten the word but know the first few letters.

Once you have found your word, just choose it and the Dictionary will show the word, what kind it is (noun, verb, etc.), the definition and even how it is used in a sentence. Furthermore, should there be any other definitions or ways the word is used, the application will also display it. If you are using it as a translator, the application will display the word in the corresponding language. For example, the word "Love" is "Amore" in Italian.
Not too sure how the word is pronounced? The free Nokia 5800 Application Dictionary lets you hear it with the "Listen" function. Just choose Option, then Listen and you will hear a robotic voice that is inherit in the Nokia 5800 system.
For those who have problems reading small fonts, you can increase the font size with a touch of a button.
The application keeps a history log of previous searched words just in case you want to recall old searched words.
This power and free Nokia 5800 application is a must for everyone. It will not only help you find definitions of the words but also usher you to know foreign words. Get this free Nokia 5800 application when you upgrade your Nokia 5800 firmware to v20.0.0.12.

Yeah, finally Nokia's OVI store is now LIVE in Australia, Ireland, Singapore and Spain with phased launches in other parts of the globe. Who knows, by the time you read this post, OVI store may be up and running in your very own country. Till then, roll back and enjoy this exclusive review of OVI store on Nokia 5800.
Alarmed by the success of Apple's App store which boasts of more than a billion application downloads in less than a year, every major smartphone company is coming up with their own App stores. RIM's APPworld and Android's Android Market have been roaring ever since their launches early this year. Not to be left far behind, Nokia had promised its customers its very own App store with over 20,000 items in the store on its inaugural launch. Well, Nokia has stood by its word with its launch of Ovi store today, while there is no feasible way to check with its 20,000 items (items and not applications!) claim, lets just take their word on that for the time being.
