Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 for Nokia 5800

By Sushant Ghargi | May 24, 2009

Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 is now available on Nokia 5800 (well, its been like 15 hrs since it first surfaced on internet). Prior to this, Adobe Flash updates were incorporated into firmware upgrades. This time, Adobe has decided to make this update available as an independent download. To update flash lite on your 5800, go to menu-> applications-> app. update.

scr000278scr000279App. update first appeared on Nokia 5800 in firmware v20, so you need to update your firmware, if you are running on v20 or earlier. The application update checks for updates on all the installed applications and hence very convenient to update allĀ  your applications at just one go. Its something like Windows update on your desktop and is much better than windows for this update application checks for available updates for all the installed applications. As can be seen in the screenshots to the left, there were two updates available for installed applications on my phone. It took me less than a minute to update and install both the updates over wi-fi.

Whats the need to update? Well, some of the highlights from the official changelog for v3.1 flash lite are:

  1. Optimized web browsing experience for more than 90% of the top 500 internet sites
  2. Flash 9 (AS2 only) support
  3. Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode
  4. H.264 support / Improved video support
  5. Improved memory handling for images
  6. MP3 Streaming support (finally!)
  7. Support for hardware acceleration (Flash Lite 3.1 supports OpenVG 1.1 to improve flash rendering performance on capable devices)
  8. Support for most ActionScript 2.0 objects and methods
  9. Linux Reference port

In case you cannot make head and tail of the above changelog, let me assure that you are not alone. Most of the terminologies make no sense to me either. However, what I know is that there are some welcome changes like support for mp3 streaming, flash 9 FLV content and better video quality. Web browsing is much faster with this update and you tube streaming is much smoother, clearer and faster. Till now I haven't found any hiccups with the update butĀ  I would love to read of some hiccups and improvements from the readers.

The bottom line is in most cases application updates make your applications work faster and smoother, so dont miss out on any updates more so when they don't cost a dime.

I have problem. My app. update just tells me that all applications are up-to-date. It doesn’t even check for update. Help me. I really want that flash update

  4. Leonardo says:

I’ve got the same problem as Leon, my device doesn’t even try to connect and it says all apps are up to date :( besides it is set to automatically check for updates often, but how often ?

But I am so upset about this handset that I am less and less interested on it anymore.

  5. Kreissu says:

Leon and Leonardo, see the solution here http://nokia5th.blogspot.com/2009/05/flash-lite-31-vinganca.html , if you don’t understand portuguese, use Google Translator at the right of the screen.

  7. Jasard says:

Hi, I have the latest firmware but the app updater isnt listed in applications? The Dictionary is, any ideas?

  8. TheDave says:

I have the same problem as Jasard. I have the latest firmware, but I don’t have the app updater. All the other new features are there, just not the app updater. No amount of resets and reinstalling the firmware has helped. Does anyone know of a solution for this?

    • @Jasard and TheDave: The only reason that I can think of for this is that your operators have left out downloads option from the firmware upgrade. I dont know what might be the reason for that. If either of you guys are not on contract, then I suggest you head to the nearest Nokia care for an explanation into this.
