Bug: No Call Log and Home Screen Shortcuts after firmware upgrade

By Anunay Kumar | August 8, 2009

Recently I upgraded my Nokia 5800 phone to the latest firmware version v30.0.011 via FOTA.  As it was promised and witnessed earlier, I expected my device to be much more enhanced in terms and performance and functionality. Well... it did look faster but I had a rather strange problem, I was no longer able to go to the Call Log from the home screen after pressing on the green call button. Another problem that I found scary was the fact that my shortcuts on the home screen were no longer visible.

Nokia 5800 Firmware Update v30.0.011

Nokia 5800 Firmware Update v30.0.011

I was beginning to believe that there was certainly something wrong with my phone's hardware as I used to use my phone to its optimum capacity. I have around 40 applications installed at this time and many of them have settings and data that are way too important for me and I can't lose them.

I then started digging deep in to the internet in search of a solution and more insight on the problem and this is what I experienced and learnt:

How I got my phone to work again?

Nokia 5800 Hard ResetI had two options that I could use - a Soft Reset and a Hard Reset. A Soft Reset resets the settings of your phone to the original factory settings. In the case of a Soft Reset, all the data on your phone remains safe and nothing happens to your applications as well. You press *7370# to do a Soft Reset or it can also be done from the phone's  settings menu.

A Hard Reset on the other hand, resets your phone to the very state that you see when you opened the new box. A Hard Reset removes all the data on your phone memory including contacts, messages, etc.

I did a Soft Reset initially and found that the problem still existed. I had no other option than to go for the Hard Reset.

Things that you must remember while you do a Hard Reset:

Firstly, make sure to do a complete phone backup using the Nokia PC Suite. Now for the Hard Reset, restart your phone and as the phone's screen shows the initial blank white screen, press  <Green Call button + Red End Call button + Camera button> (all the three buttons to be pressed at the same time).

Problems that complicated the process at this point:

I was unable to take a complete backup of my phone with the latest Nokia PC Suite available to date on a Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 desktop computer. This was mainly because the PC Suite got stuck at the "Phone Model-Specific Settings" backup point and kept getting stuck every time i tried to do it. I see the main reason could be that there were a lot of applications on my phone or the phone settings had got corrupted after the upgrade.

Finally, I ended up losing all my data on the phone after the Hard Reset as I had no backup. The only good part was that I now no longer had the problems that I noted above and my phone was as good as new. At this point I have a mixed feeling.

My suggestions

  • Do not load your phone with a lot of applications. Uninstall the ones that you hardly use.
  • Always have an automatic scheduled backup on your phone. There a lot of options for the same.
  • Do not rush through a firmware upgrade as soon as you hear about it. Wait for a while for its reviews and then go for it.
  • Always take a backup before using any Beta Software that is so generously distributed free of cost.

The above are some of the lessons that I have learnt. However, the problem that I reported above has happened with a lot of people and not just with people who upgraded to the new firmware. It's just your luck and should always take precautions because precaution is better than cure.

Coming up

My new posts will focus on a complete guide to various backup options that are available for Nokia 5800 which include both free and non-free options. So stay tuned for more. Also, post your comments and views that you may have after reading this post. Please share anything new that has helped you get out of the reported situation above. I used to have the same problem since I upgraded my 5800 to firmward version 21. however, i love my datas and time more than my homescreen shortcuts and I am continuing with the problem. Hope Nokia will do something about it in their upcoming version

  3. Redoc_codeR says:

When I tried the backup, mine also seemed to hang on the “Phone Model-Specific Settings”. But then I did a chkdsk on the memory disk and tried it again. it still seemed to hang up, but completed the work…ie, after 30 mins of waiting period -_- ..

I did not understand what is this V30 new version upgrade for…cause it makes no different after and before upgrade on my 5800. the speed still the same, nothing special, no changelog available. HEY WAKE UP NOKIA …..

  5. mimo says:

damn true mr ivan, previous upgrade is much stable… Nokia is too stingy to give us n97 lookalike upgrades..

  6. piso says:

how i can make the hard rest? I have the same problem..

    • Anunay Kumar says:

For Hard Reset. Restart your phone. As soon as the screen lights up, press the following keys together at the same time –
      1. The GREEN call key below the screen
      2. The RED End Call key below the screen
      3. The Camera button at the side of the phone
All the above mentioned keys are to be pressed at the same time while the phone is starting up.

  7. piso says:

    Hi,

I had the same problem, but with a previous update (2nd available update)… the solution was, as mentioned, backup the data and reset [hard reset]. After that, just apply the backup and everything will be as shiny as before :)

  10. mukky says:

hey, i updated my 5800 to the latest version and i had no problems with it… the shortcuts work the call log works when u press the green call key… so this problem might only be with certain phones released in certain countries coz i live in australia but got my phone in january from bubia…

  11. anunay says:

yes this problem has not been with every user.its there only with some unlucky ones :-(

  12. Ivan D Great says:

dear 5800 lover and owner, as i was saying that there is no big change after all, after upgrading to v30. What is the point? Nokia must be sleeping zzz….. Those who have problems after upgrading complain direct to nokia and tell them to Wake Up

  13. piso says:

it doesnt work i gonna sell this stupid phone today fuck nokia iphone is much better than this shit

  14. Kncha says:

Dear Anunay I really need to thank you for your recommendations. You made my day!
I had the problem when I upgraded to de V 21. etc I tried everything but the hard reset. Of course I lost most of the apps but I knew already the outcome since you told us. Is not big of a deal since they were all free. I didn’t go for the back up cuz It would’ve taken too much time. Thanks, thanks and thanks again I think is worth it!

P.S. You have to press the 3 buttons as soon as you turn the phone on don’t wait for the white screen. :-)

  15. I Own Nokia 5800 says:

I FOUND OUT THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT THE SOLUTION:-
—-this same exact problem has occured to me for the 16 th time and i spend full 4 hours to transfer image videos application games and install the sis and jar files one by one….
—–the CAUSE is usb data transfer from pc to mobile…. at first i used 2 think its bcoz of some corrupted theme or application,or firmware problem but NO!!!! its bcoz of the usb transfer…. me, b4 posting this here i ‘ve done complete research on this phone with installing applications and without installing ,i found out the usb cause…..
at 1st i had firmware v11 i had the problem then updated to v20 then v21 then v30 all the firmware versions have this problem. now iam planning to use bluetooth to connect pc and mobile…THIS IS THE TEMPORARY SOLUTION TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM IN FUTURE!!!.

NOW NOKIA SHOULD TAKE CARE IN IMPROVING THIER NOKIA 5800 AT PRESENT AND NOT THE N97 AND THE OTHER TOUCHSCREEN PHONE WHICH IS GOING 2 RELEASE….
nokia should put full concentration on this phone and not divide it between other phones…
they should make a stable error, bug free firmware with kinetic scrolling and other improvements wanted badly by millions of nokia 5800 users then once it is done they should shift to other phones!!!!! i would have done this if were in nokia place……

    • mojk says:

you r right, it happened to me right after transferring some game to my 5800 via usb. Crap! crap! the dialer and contacts buttons on home screen wont work anymore in basic or shorcuts view! Only work in contacts view. At first I thought I wouldnt be able to dial a number anymore, then I found the dialer appears also by pressing the menu button and then the green one.

    Thanks.

  22. Adam says:

Hi Anunay, so when you did the hard-reset, you lost your firmware update too?. Because I have updated to Ver. 30.0.011 & having the same problem, but I think I’ll rather hang on to the problem pending a new update than reseting(at least I can maneuver round the problem)

    • Anunay says:

No not at all…your firmware stays the same as you were last on. Your firmware will stay the same as Ver. 30.0.011 after the Hard Reset.

  23. Shah says:

i had a problem too after doing the firmware upgrade though not that much of a problem. The Instant Messaging (IM) cannot run anymore. after i press on the icon it just blink once and nothing happen after that. but i dont mind about it coz im not using it.

  24. shadeontop says:

you definitely don’t need to hard reset your phone! this problem can be solved in less than a minute. just use your Y-browser application and go to c:\private\10202BE9\persists then delete the file named 10275102.cre. Restart your phone and see your shortcuts come back. this method has already been posted above but it seems people aren’t noticing it.  enjoy!!!!!!!

  25. LordAdamko says:

i dondt have the c:\private folder on my phone :?

  26. Suren says:

Thanks a million….. since the day (June 09), I updated my phone to new firmware, my nokia turned my life miserable. It was having so many problems that I was more and more willing to change my device and buy a another brand. Had i not read your post today, i would have bought me a new device. Thanks one again, my 5800 Xm is now working fine.

  27. Nephytis says:

I had the same problem, and I fixed it now with the hard reset. I made a backup before, thankds god, otherwise I would have lost everything (contacts, messages, calendar notes, etc). I think the problem was that I upgraded and during the upgrade I had an error (it said the phone wasn’t connected anymore, but yet the upgrade was finished).
thanks a lot for the fix :)

  28. Wael says:

    HELP PLZ!!!
It asks for MMC unlock code after the hard reset, I have tried 12345 and 0000 but nothing works…
    Please help

  31. shadeontop says:

pls understand that Y-browser is a third party file explorer software. it does not come pre-installed in your phone. you can also use file explorer pro instead. just follow the steps i mentioned earlier. it’s so easy.

  32. Darwin25275 says:

to all who helped anunay. Tnx. but how can I have Y-browser or alike? do you have it on other sites? tnx a lot and happy new year to all. darn.
