Support the disaster relief work in Haiti – Make donations

Haiti is the third largest country in the Carribean. It is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Haiti was struck by a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the 12th January which has affected around three million people. This earthquake hit the most populated part of the country and claimed about 200000 lives. On 21st January, the Haiti government announced that more than 80000 bodies were buried in mass graves. A huge number of people are homeless and without food.

It is these times when we should act together and as one world even though if we speak different languages and have different cultures. There is aid coming to Haiti from all possible mediums, however, they are all insufficient if you compare compare the magnitude of destruction to life and property. The already weak economy has further suffered a big blow.

It is our duty on humanitarian grounds to help the people of Haiti in what ever way possible. The country needs a huge huge financial aid and all the major government bodies and corporate bodies including the NGOs have setup numerous ways in which you can donate funds to support Haiti.

Follow this link to DONATE funds to HAITI

You can use Google Checkout to donate funds if you are out of USA and use SMS donations if you are in USA.

Help Guide: Backup Service by Nokia via OVI Sync for Contacts and Calendar

My personal feelings about Nokia 5800 are that it was launched prematurely and needed to be tested more before the final launch. It was launched soon so as to keep up with the ever increasing competition in the Touch Mobile market with HTC-Samsung-SonyEricsson taking on.

I believe Nokia is well aware of the fact that most people face these bugs often that could be sometimes disastrous and thus, offers a free service that helps you backup all your contacts and calendar entries to Nokia’s safe and secure Ovi Server. This is actually a Sync service.

After a look of how to choose the source of Ovi Sync on the Nokia 5800, let’s see a detailed step-by-step guide to using the free OVI Sync Service.

Nokia 5800 Game Review: Sudoku First touch

In my pursuit of that perfect sudoku game on my 5800, I have been mining over Internet for quiet a while now. Just when I was about to give up, I came across this amazing package from Vesuvian Software called Sudoku Soft Touch. Lets see how Sudoku Soft Touch fares on Nokia 5800 and how it compares with Sudoku Master.

Installation

Sudoku Soft Touch can be downloaded for free from this link. Its a zip file and hence you will need a zip manager on your 5800 to directly download on to your phone for installation. The unzipped installation file (.jar) is just 550 kb and installation is pretty easy not requiring more than two clicks for complete installation.

Welcome Screen

Unlike Sudoku Master, Sudoku Soft touch does have some customizable options like setting the difficulty level before one starts the puzzle:

Nokia 5800 App Review: Snake Deluxe v2.0

scr000031Snake Deluxe as the name suggests is a game with a similar concept to Nokia’s age old Snake game. You have to guide the snake to eat a fruit and as it eats the fruit, its size increases and thus making the guidance difficult and challenging. I do agree that its an addictive game and has a great time killing capacity.

The graphics is very accurate and seriously designed giving you the feel of a premium game. It is a full screen game with a lot of levels and modes (Easy, Hard and Adventure). In each of these modes the landscape within which the snake has to crawl changes with different hurdles.

One of the best features of Snake Deluxe 2 is the usability feature of its interface. If you need to close the game or pause it or abandon a game and restart another, then it has controls are placed at very convenient positions. Also, it has useful help tips for each stage which you have the option to disable if you don’t want them to appear.

Nokia 5800 Game Review – Resco Bubbles

bubbles_scr_01Resco Bubbles is a free game for Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97. It is a motion sensor based puzzle game. The idea of this game is to burst a series of bubbles in a sequence so as to move to the next level. The motion control of this game is really good on Nokia 5800. I have tried it on my phone and really enjoyed playing it. It is really addictive in the sense that you need to burst the bubbles in the minimum possible time to be the top scorer. There is a timer that assists you in the task.

bubbles_scr_06The unregistered version of the game is free but only offers 5 levels of play but even that is really sufficient for killing time waiting at an airport or a queue or at a bus stop. However, if you wish to register, this game offers you 60 different levels and comes for 14,65$. If you really enjoy playing puzzle games, I would definitely suggest you this game. Even if you don’t wish to buy this game, you can enjoy the available 5 levels of this game for life as there are no trial period limits.

bubbles_scr_02With respect to Nokia 5800, this game really looks high end in terms of user interface and graphics. It works great with out any hitches and has great control in terms of the motion sensor control.

Visit here to download Resco Bubbles. An important fact to remember is that the website no where says “Symbian S60 5th Edition” or Nokia 5800. However, the application is updated and optimized for Nokia S60 5th Edition Devices. Just select SYMBIAN S60 from the “Compatibility” drop down and click on DOWNLOAD button.

Kindly comment on the content of the post if you liked the game. It has been personally tested by me. Download Resco Bubbles Here

Nokia 5800 App Review: MyPhone

screenshot0017MyPhone is a user interface (UI) that will give your Nokia 5800 an iPhone look. I always tease my friend that owns an iPhone that my phone can always transform to any phone interface because it's running on symbian, and iPhones can't do that. This application is using flash that is installed on our phones. Some of you might have come across this app; I'm just going to write an overview for those that have not bought this app.

First things first, the front wallpaper look is really neat; it even has a slider to unlock the phone. Technically you are just opening the MyPhone interface since your phone actually has it's own key lock, and if you have autolock turned on, that makes it three steps before you can actually use your phone. Once you entered the main menu, you'll see the icons similar to an iPhone, these icons are pointed to the apps and settings based on their names.

screenshot0018There are four screen pages for the menu. The first page consists of your most important and most used applications. Second and third page are your tools and settings. It also has an icon for quitting MyPhone and lock, to obviously lock, but what it really does is, sends you back to the front page. MySettings icon is for changing the wallpaper, although it comes with pre-installed wallpaper, it would have been nice if we can choose our own wallpaper, but you can use your own phrases as wallpaper. RSS feed icon is very functional, it let's you browse to your RSS feed in a nice interface. Weather icon is pretty simple, but it's nice to have. The fourth page is what they call MyApp page. You can assign any application you want; the icons were named Myself, which you can rename it, however you can't change the icon picture itself. As a default most of them are assigned to your internet homepage and settings. Also I want to mention, the bottom three icons, which is defaulted to your contacts, SMS, and call. You can always change it to whatever you want.

Nokia 5800 NAM release back to pending

nokia5800-namSome of you have already known this by now. All Nokia 5800 North American (NAM) are pulling off the shelves, due to issues with 3G unable to get signals. I feel bad for North American consumers who waited this long to get their hands on Nokia 5800.

Other website already confirmed that the issue was the 3G signal. For some of you who need an extra confirmation, I did my own legwork. I called New York and Chicago Flagship store to see if they are going to give me the same information. When I called Chicago Flagship, the person that picked up the phone just told me that it's not available and didn't say why. I grilled the guy with questions and finally he said that there was an issue with 3G. They even took the display (NAM) of the shelves. As for the NYC flagship store, the lady was kind enough to tell me that it was pulled off due to 3G issue and they don't have an estimated date of the next release. She apologized for the inconvenience.

There you go, no ETA as of this time for Nokia 5800 NAM. Just to let you know, NYC flagship is still selling the European version, both Red and Blue, and last time I check, Chicago has some Red.

If your provider is AT&T you might have to wait for the next release. And for the folks that has T-Mobile USA, it doesn't matter if it's North American or European version, it will not get a 3G reception, since T-mobile USA is using a unique frequency for their 3G. EDGE and T-mobile hotspots are your only options. I'll say just get the Europe version and start enjoying the phone.

Hopefully Nokia will be able to fix the problem soon, so that our North American consumers can start stimulating the economy by getting their Nokia 5800. Don't think twice, you deserve it.

Games: Marble Maze for Nokia 5800

Marble MazeMarble Maze is an addicting game with labyrinths on which you need to control the ball, not allowing it to touch the black points and driving it to goal. I think one way or another we have all played a kind of game like this, I remember to play with a "real" box (wasn't a virtual game)  and I needed to handle the box in a way so that I could get the ball into a certain point.

What was a game that helped me passing the boring times is now a virtual game and can be played as before, nothing changes. I mean...if something has changed is for better, because now you are able to play Marble Maze whenever you want from your Nokia 5800 Xpress Music.

"Marble Maze", from Cahoona Games, is a 5800 and N97 game that uses the orientation sensor built inside these Nokia phones. Like the real game, you just need to drive the ball into the goal flags with your own hands. That's simple, your 5800 is now the box and you simply use your hands to manipulate the ball.

I have played a game when I was in the Symbian SmartPhone Show on which I used the Nokia N97 (I am not sure if it was the N97...) to drive a remote control car - All I needed to do was handling the phone to left, right, up and down to make the car move. I can tell you it was difficult, but a new experience, and it was like a remote control indeed, because I haven't used any cables. Let's see what I will find in the MWC in Barcelona next week - yah, we will be there.
