Nokia 5230 is another variant of Nokia 5800 customized to suit a lower price and match other touch phones in the lower price category of touch phones. The look of Nokia 5230 remains almost similar Nokia 5800 but there are a few major differences between the two.
It is a really great news that Gmail now provides complete support for Email, Calendar and Contacts sync and you also get the Email Push Support via Mail For Exchange. Gmail happens to be the only public free email service provider to be supporting Mail For Exchange from Nokia. Mail For Exchange is an application that lets you sync your email account running on Microsoft's Exchange Server. Earlier, Mail For Exchange for a phone user only made sense if he/she had a paid exchange server based email service or used his/her office email account.
Gmail Profile Setup on MFE
I have used a exchange server based account on Mail For Exchange and using Gmail on it had the same data efficiency and performance. Now some people would ask why would one use the Mail For Exchange instead of the inbuilt email facility. To answer this, i would just say that with Mail For Exchange, you have more control on the way you want the mails to be delivered on your phone plus you also get the contact and calendar sync. The profile setup is very easy, all you need is the exchange server name as "m.google.com", username as "xyz@gmail.com" and your gmail password. If you do not have Mail For Exchange, you can get from the Ovi Store.
Reviewing firmwares is a difficult task when you worry about bricking you phone. However, do not worry since I am there to test these firmwares before you try them on your Nokia 5800. Today, i am reviewing the firmware which offers you Nine Different Home Screens. It is called CFW XpressLite v70.This has some of the home-screens that are common to the the CFW Xtension^1. However, this features two very amazing home-screens, OmniaHD and Vodafone FlipOver. Unfortunately, for OmniaHD, you need to do a lot of tweaks to your existing settings before you will be able to run it. I would certainly not recommend running OmniaHD since it requires a lot of RAM and keeps breaking because of low RAM so much to it that it becomes a pain at the end of the day. Vodafone FlipOver is a great home-screen to run and works like a charm.
Today, we are showcasing one of the various firmwares that can be installed on to your Nokia 5800. The firmware Xtension^1 designed by Upakul has been reported to be the fastest firmware for Nokia 5800. This firmware has 8 different Home Screens and each has its own feature which i think will never get released by Nokia. These include 3 widgetised home-screen and 4 other home-screens. There is 1 home-screen which is the original Nokia home-screen. Performance and memory is highly optimised and includes the Nokia Navigator theme. It also has patches which now make all the hidden system files and folders visible in the default Nokia File Browser. The best part of this firmware is the increase in the Phone Memory size. The firmware has been modded to include additional 5 MB of the phone memory earlier reserved for FOTA. The base theme Xtension includes an overall change in the device shell that includes the Nokia Music Player. These are just a few of the features that i have mentioned. Have a look at the video below to see it for real. Having tested it for over two days now, i give this firmware a full green signal.
I hope the above video would have looked tempting to many. Now, that we have installed JAF and got the v50 firmware using Navifirm, we are ready to move to the final step. Before, we do that, there are a few things still to be done.
So, in the previous part of the Nokia 5800 Custom Firmware Tutorial, we understood the process of installing JAF flashing utility and get it to work. Now proceeding further with the process, we now need to understand as to what is Navifirm and how to use it. As the name suggests, Navifirm is derived from Navigation + Firmware. Thus, Navifirm allows you to directly access the latest and older firmwares of all the Nokia phones from the Nokia's servers. Thus, the downloaded firmware will be 100% genuine and legal. Further, to justify the usage of Navifirm, it is needed to download the main firmware file that will be used with the custom Firmware files. The custom firmware files are like supporting files that work with the main firmware file released by Nokia. Consider the 'Custom Firmware' as a pizza in which the pizza base is the main firmware file downloaded using Navifirm from Nokia and other files as the toppings.
You can download a copy of the Navifirm software from this link. For some unforeseen reason if this link does not work, consider googling the term 'Download Navifirm', you will have a number of other download mirrors. Considering, that you have successfully downloaded and installed Navifirm, follow the video above very carefully and download the Nokia 5800 v50 Firmware file ending with extension '.C00'. I will continue to my next post and reveal the entire process of flashing your Nokia 5800 with a new customized firmware. Till then, stay tuned.
