Nokia 5800 S60 app review: ALON MP3 Dictaphone

Alon MP3 Dictaphone is on the best apps I've seen which can do three things for you in a way that you will love. The app plays all your music on you got on your phone, records phone calls and even can record anything that is happening around you, like a lecture for example. The is now available for S60 5th edition too.

The Alon MP3 Dictaphone supports a variety of audio formats, like MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG, AAC, MP4, M4A, AMR and othes. These are some of the popular audio formats in the audio world and the app supports all of them. So you dont have to convert your audio files to any one format for the app to support.

The app has an improved user interface for the touch screen devices. Though the design of the app is a bit old school, the features remain the modern. The app records your phone conversations very clearly and there are no beeps in between the recording like some of the other similar apps give you. Another great function of the app is the ability to cut the MP3 files right on your phone. Cool, eh? The app even supports meta data on audio files.

You can buy Alon MP3 Dictaphone for your Nokia 5800 from Handango for $29.95 over here. The is supported on other S60 phones too. You can download a trial version of the app and try it before you buy. The download is available on the same page. You can buy from here too.

Nokia 5800 S60 app review: Handy Safe Suite

This is the best security app for your data on your Nokia 5800, hands down. This app makes it so easy to add and maintain all your personal info at one place, yet properly organized. You get the cool new graphical card representation in the new version of the app which makes it easier than never before for you to maintain your data.

The app is simple to use, you will never get a doubt using this app on your phone. Seriously, the only I got when I used this app was how on Earth did these people make this complex app so easy to use. Like some of the other apps which give you flashy user interface, this provides a clean, decent look for its app, but the features on this app can not be matched by others.

You can have different graphical representation of cards for different categories, like the credit cards can have one color and your email accounts can have another. These cards are tiled on your screen by the app so that you can easily select the one you want and get complete info on the corresponding item. The app uses sophisticated 448 bit Blowfish encryption method to encrypt your data. So you can be sure that your data is certainly safe with the app. And one more good feature of the app is that you can backup all the stuff you have on the app to your Windows PC with ease. So even if you lose your data on the phone, you can always restore it back from your PC.

You can buy Handy Safe Suite for your Nokia 5800 from Handango for $34.95 over here. Handango has an offer for you. If you buy Handy Weather for your Nokia 5800 with Handy Safe Suite, you just to pay $47.92 for both apps combined. If you want to try out the Handy Safe Suite before you buy, you will get the download on the same page. If the given link does not work, use the link here.

Nokia 5800 app review: SPB Mobile Shell

SPB Mobile Shell is a very popular mobile shell app in the Windows Mobile community. SPB made it way into the Symbian world very recently. They have released their popular Mobile Shell for the Symbian platform as well. This is one of the best home screen replacement app you can get for the Symbian platform, and it would not be wrong if I say that this is the only home screen replacement app which does not feel like its a third party app. This completely behaves as a native app on the phone. I would very much like Symbian to come up with feature like this them self.

The app gives you up to five home screens. You can switch between them with just a horizontal swipe on the screen. A small white bar at the bottom of the screen tells you in which home screen currently are. You can place widgets on each home screen, a different one on each. You get a very well designed weather app. It automatically refreshes to give you latest weather forecasts. The menus are changed, but only the first level menus. As you go deep into the menu, you get the default menus. The contacts menu is the app's though, and is pretty much organized well.

Conclusion: you are going to love the power of having up to five home screens and having a different widget on each of them. The animations of the app when you switch between the menus and I especially love the weather widget. The app costs around $29.95 on Handango. Its available right now and is the updated version too. You can either download a trial and buy the complete version, which you will eventually after using the trial version. You can buy SPB Mobile Shell for your Nokia 5800 from Handango's page over here. Click here if that link doesn't work.

Nokia 5800 S60v5 app review: National Geographic

If you are a fan of the famous National Geographic channel, you are going to love this app for your Nokia 5800. This app, the National Geographic, connects to the server of the channel and gets to you an amazing photo each day. Each month, there is a different category from which the photos will be chosen from.

You can get up every morning o get a new photo at the top of the list. This month's category, however, is Photos From the 2009 International Photo Contest. You can see a sample in the screen shot I have provided. Its a very light app, it will not take up much of your memory.

If you like any photo from the collection, you can share the photo from within the app. This is a cool feature. But when it comes to sharing options, its a disappointment. There are no Facebook and Twitter sharing options in the app for reasons that I dont know. The only modes of sharing the photos are SMS and Email. If you SMS it, the link to that particular photo will be sent in the message and your friend can simply tap on the link on their phone to view it. May be in the future versions, we can hope for the addition of Facebook and Twitter sharing options.

Tapping the Ovi button on the bottom of the screen will take you to the Ovi store. Tapping on the Home button will take you to the app's home screen where you get the list of all the photos of the current month.

You can download the National Geographic app for free for your Nokia 5800 from the Ovi Store.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Smart Gallery v2

Smart Gallery is a nice to have utility on your phone. It allows you to hide your important files and folders. As the name suggests, Smart Gallery by MIGITAL works smartly and hides the folder in the regular file browser of your phone. All the hidden folders will not display in the default file browser list.

Smart Gallery for Nokia 5800

The utility has another great advantage in the form of an online server that records your password that comes in handy when you lose it. The password gets emailed when you forget it. Since the password is not stored locally on the phone, there is no chance for anyone else to know it even accidently browsing through your phone. Smart Gallery hides each and every type of file. However, you would not be able to hide any system folders. The interface of the application is very easy to use and intuitive. It appears to be as simple as the other system menu options.

Firmware Upgrade Change-log for v51.0.006

Firmware Upgrade Change-log for v51.0.006

The latest firmware does not have any major changes that i have found out in my last 2 hours of usage. However, the performance and touch response time is greatly improved. I wonder if that is because of a fresh install but still there is some difference. The navigation of the menus is faster and smooth. If you remember well enough, in the last firmware update of v50.0.005, many of yo0u had complained that the Quick Office and Get Rihana shortcuts were missing. It  is time for you to be happy as the new firmware update has both of these and i have put the pictures in this post.

Change-log

  • Rihana Shortcut in Internet Menu
  • Quick Office Suite v4.2
  • General performance improvements.

Nokia 5800 App Review: CardzCreator – Create Personalized Mobile E-Greetings

CardzCreator is a nice new tool for creating e-greetings right on your mobile with a personalized message. It comes with four different themes that you can select from to create your greeting card. However, you can download more themes after registering the application.  To get started after installation, you require a working data connection in order to accept the license agreement. The application allows you to customize certain elements in your card. You can zoom in and zoom out an element in the card and also rotate it three dimensionally.  CardzCreator allows you to either post the greeting card on your friends Facebook profile or send out a SMS. I particularly liked the Facebook integration since it is used by most people now. Another great feature is the ability to save the created greeting as an image in your memory card which can then be sent through any other means that you normally use with your mobile, email, upload, etc.
