Sync problems?
We want to thank Kalpesh Solanki for contributing to this blog post. It is a very relevant issue especially those who are using the online Ovi backup or sync feature.
Did you know that you can backup your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone’s important details online using the Ovi.com website?
Not all Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone users are aware of the online Ovi Sync service. Ovi Sync allows you to sync your contacts, calendar events and notes online using Nokia’s Ovi.com. The service can be used as a way to backup your data or to edit it in your computer to then send it back to your phone. You can register at Ovi.com website free of charge.
Some folks are facing a problem when syncing their contacts, calendars and notes on the Ovi.com website. When they sync their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, the ones they have deleted sudden reappears.
Maybe you have experience this.
Here is an example. You have a contact entry named Mr. Anderson in your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone which was synced to your Ovi account. Then, you decided to delete Mr. Anderson from your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. When you sync your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone to Ovi.com, Mr. Anderson appears again in your Phone.
How about the other way around? You delete the entry in your Ovi.com account. But since you still have his number on your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, once you sync, Ovi.com will have Mr. Anderson added online. The same happens to calendar and notes.
In the Nokia Pc Suite, you get to choose who the priority source is (either the PC or the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone). Can you also have the same feature using the Ovi.com website? How can we solve this problem? We would like to propose a solution.
- Go to Sync application in your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone and make sure that current profile is "Ovi.com".
- Tap on “option” and go to "Edit sync Profile"
- Look for the option called "Synchronisation type." Tap on it.
Now there are Three options. Please read carefully because you will be losing your precious info if you do not pay attention.
- If you choose "Both ways”, nothing changes. It means the sync will check both your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone and the Ovi.com website and will make sure both databases contain the same entries.
- If you choose "To server only", it means all the data on your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone will be replaced with all the data found on Ovi.com data.
- If you choose "To phone only”, this means that the data on your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone will replace all the entries found in your Ovi.com account.
Of course, you should make the necessary changes once you synced your data for both the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone and the Ovi.com account. Once both your accounts are similar, kindly return to the default settings (Both ways) to ensure that your contacts, calendar entries and notes are similar.
We hope this has helped you in experiencing the benefits of your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone.

Is this an intended feature that always behaves like this, or a (rare) bug? I mean, standard 2-way syncing should also ensure that stuff deleted on one side gets deleted on the other. What if I modify contact in my phone instead of delete, which side then “wins”?
Dear,
Thanks for this information, same is applicable to PC-suite too.

It’s a great service, but Nokia did something which is very stupid.
After syncing and logging-in to OVI, you could see all the recent information on the page after the log-in (all the recent numbers, all the closest events and tasks), but now after log-in you see the same commercial just like before log-in.
It’s like to fire in your own leg. Nokia – change it back!
Or the same can be done using Google Sync: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147951

Useful information, thanx, I was looking for it. This also applies to N95 8GB and I guess all phones that support ovi sync, it’s not specific to 5800 Xpress Music
