Nokia 5800 Help Guide: Nokia 5800’s Internal Device Backup Facility

14 August 2009Entry by Anunay Kumar 3,950 views 22 Comments

Continuing with my effort to educate the Nokia 5800’s users of the existing free backup options, I am posting a small guide on utilizing the internal device backup option that existed ever since the very first firmware that came with Nokia 5800.

If you don’t know, there is an inbuilt backup option available with Nokia 5800, a free backup option again. This backup option allows you to create backup right on your memory card. You can use this backup option both manually and automatically. You can back up the following six items – Settings, Messages, Contacts, Calendar entries, Bookmarks and Files.

Usage instructions for  Internal Device Backup Facility

1. Go to your Applications Menu. Click on File Manager.

2. Find the Backup option in the File Manager Menu. Click on Backup option.

3. In the Backup Menu, you will see three options – Backup Contents, Repeat Backup, Backup Time

Scr000031

4. Select Backup Contents. Here you choose the items that you wish to backup. Select your desired backup options and click on the OK button.

Scr000032

5. Select Repeat Backup. This is where you set the automatic backup. You can choose to backup Daily or Weekly. Choose Never if you wish to backup manually. My personal suggestion would be to backup daily.

6. Select Backup Time. This is where you set the time at which you want your backup to start. Set this sometime in late night when you are most likely to be NOT using your phone. This is because when the backup starts for a few minutes you won’t be able to use your applications on the phone that interact with your memory card. I personally suggest not to use the phone at all when the phone back up is in progress.

7. Now you have successfully setup your automatic backup. To backup MANUALLY, while you are on the very first screen of the Backup Menu, select OPTIONS -> BACKUP NOW.

8. To RESTORE, while you are on the very first screen of the Backup Menu, select OPTIONS -> RESTORE. Select the items that you wish to restore from the Restore Menu. Click on OK. Follow the instructions after which your phone will RESTART.

When is this backup option most useful ?

I agree that this option may not be useful after a Hard Reset but it really is very useful after a Soft Reset. Also, if you happen to mess-up your calendar entries and contacts after a sync conflict or error or by mistake, this option is a life saver. I had once wiped out my entire phonebook and calendar while trying to setup my Mail for Exchange account. But, then I had this backup option enabled which helped me in time.

Please post your comments and thoughts on the content of this post. Also, let me know if you have any difficulties using this backup option.

    it works just fine..

Why would it not be useful after a hard reset, if the phone settings are not restored?

I have a need to hard reset the phone, and I’m looking for a way to restore things like messages too..

Guys, i am not really sure about this but i think that there is more probability that this backup would not work because a Hard Reset totally removes all the data from your phone memory which will also remove the data that maintains the phone OS’s mapping of the backup on the memory card that guides it during a Restore.

Hey Kyle, you can use the PC Suite Back Up option instead. Please visit the homepage to find the details of the entire process in a post written by me. That is tried and tested option so it would definitely work after a Hard Reset.

does the hard reset removes the data from the momory card or just from the phone momory ? pls let me know about it .

  • Anunay (author) said:

Hi ThOmX, the Hard Reset removes data only from the phone memory. All the data remains intact on the memory card.

    Hi Anunay ,

I am using the Nokia 580 from last october and i have taken the bakup same as described above.

I have recently re-intalled the new version of software 50.0 in my handset.
The backup i have taken before the re-installation of software when i am trying to restore it and slected the content to retore the option comes as “Restore selected Backed up content to phone memory.” I press “yes” but after that the restore screen come where the line has to increse while perfoming the restore.
But the same screen keep on for long time. Nothng happes. i left it for more than 1 hour but nothing happened,
Please guide me if any oter option has to be done or if there is any other problem.
Waiting for reply as by all contact have been deleted and wat it back soon. :( Need your help :-)
    Thanks,
    Shobhit

The internal backup is not safe for a firmware upgrade or reinstallation because if there is a change in the internal device backup system in the new firmware, the earlier backup may not be supported. But I think you took a backup in the same firmware version and reinstalled it. Why don’t you try to just connect your phone as a masss storage to your PC and try to do a scan and fix any memory card folder structure errors if there. It helps sometimes.
