Nokia 5800 Help Guide: Signing Unsigned Apps without Hacking your phone

By Anunay Kumar | August 11, 2009

I have gone through a number of articles explaining how to hack your Nokia 5800 which I found very interesting but useless. There are a number of reasons why I suggest not hacking your phone.

  • You tend to install a number of SIS files you cannot trust. They can have a resident Trojan.
  • In a number of hacking tricks, there is a server installed which runs in the background and facilitates the installation of apps without certificates. Now, this server eats both your RAM and memory space.
  • By hacking your phone you actually break the security shield provided by Nokia which in some cases may cancel your warranty by Nokia too. That means if something happens to your phone even by a hardware failure, Nokia gets a chance to escape saying you modified the proprietary software provided by Nokia.

Generally, I won’t suggest you even adopting the process of signing the unsigned apps. But, since the Nokia 5800 users tend to be adventurous, they often adopt any method for installing the unsigned apps so I thought at least this  process which I am suggesting is a bit better one if not the best. This at least ensures that you get to keep the inbuilt security alive and going with Nokia’s warranty norms.

Please follow the instructions below to understand the process of signing unsigned apps.

Step-1: Visit http://andy.ehandysoft.com/devcert.php (Visit this link. You will find two text boxes. The one where you need to provide your IMEI number and other where you need to verify the image. After filling in both the data correctly click on the submit button. On the next page, you receive a message confirming the submission of your request for a Symbian Developer’s Certificate. You need this certificate for signing any unsigned app. This certificate is exclusive for your device and you cannot sign apps for any other device using this certificate. The worst part is that you need to wait 24 Hrs for your certificate to get generated. I know this sucks but trust me this certificate is worth this wait. This certificate costs 20$ if you request this with “Symbiansigned.com”. With this certificate, you can sign 95% of the unsigned apps that you get on the internet.

Step-2: I assume that its 24 Hrs from the time you requested your certificate. Now, go back to step-1 and repeat the entire process. This time after clicking SUBMIT, you will get two links on the next page, written in Chinese (I guess!!). Click on the first link, you will receive a download pop-up for a RAR file. Save this file to your computer and unzip. A signing certificate comes in set of two files, a Security Certificate and a Key file. You need both of them for signing the apps.

Step-3: After successfully acquiring the certificate, it’s time to download the signing application which you need to install on your computer. Follow this link to download X-Sign 1.3.
Note: If this link does not work for any reason, just google “X-Sign” and you will get lots of other mirrors for downloading X-Sign.

X-sign 1.3 is a VB.Net based application which provides a nice UI based signing platform. After downloading the application, install it.

Step-4: I assume you have X-Sign installed. Now launch the program and locate the key file, the certificate file and the “signsis.exe” file. You are now ready to sign your apps now. The "signsis.exe" file comes in the X-Sign installation file.

How to sign the apps ?

For example, I am taking an unsigned application and I will sign the app and install it on my Nokia 5800.
Here I will try to install an application iphonesque_fp1_1.3_UAChange which is an unsigned app and gives a certificate error on Nokia 5800.

Launching XSign.exe and locating all the required files – Certificate/Key/Signsis.exe and adding the unsigned application for signing on the XSign console. Click on START button. The application is signed and the folder containing the signed app is opened automatically.

So now, i am able to successfully install the application and no more certificate error. I have installed around 40 apps till now by signing them and found just one that i was unable to sign. So i give this method a 95% success rate.

So give this method a try, if I can do it, even you can do it. Don’t hack your phone unnecessarily. Please post your comments and views on the content of this post.

==============Special Note for Vista Users==================

Create folder "Signed" in the installation directory - c:\Program Files\XSign\Signed
To see the files that are signed and saved to this folder, click on the "Compatibility Files" button as shown in the below screenshot.

You may also sign your programs from within you phone using something like http://thesymbianblog.com/2009/07/04/how-to-sign-unsigned-files-on-a-s60-3rd5th-edition-device-itself/ . :D

Dear Anunay, Your guide is very good. But pls note that the VB version of Xsign on Vista Business(dunno for other versions) gives an error message when finish signing the sis file with this error:

“c\Program Files\signed refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer,… ‘

I looked on their website and there is a java version of this app on this link http://www.milosrandjelovic.org/programi/download/XSign2.zip

And no more errors. Also note that,as u said, not all apps can be signed properly. I could not sign an app for N-Gage installer for 5800.

Also there is another app called freesigner which can be installed on ur N5800 and it does the job for signing unsigned apps directly on the mobile.

Thanks Niven, i actually forgot to put this in the post.

Special note for Vista Users ————————

Create the folder called “Signed” in the following path
      C:\Program Files\XSign\Signed

Once you click on START, the application gets signed but you won’t see that in the Signed folder, to make the signed files visible in that folder, you need to click on “Show Compatibility Files” button the top menu of that folder.
