Nokia N97 and Nokia 5800 are two different entities and comparing them is not justified at all but i have tried my level best to give a basic idea about the major differences between the two in this post. This may ease confusions of individuals who are on the brink of deciding which one to buy.
Although they support almost the same apps, you just have to browse the Nokia N97 Blog to see that they are not exactly the same.
First of all, Nokia N97 offers a full Qwerty keyboard apart from the touch screen which is only user data input option for Nokia 5800. Though both the phones share the same ARM 11 434 MHz processor they have huge differences in the memory aspect. Nokia N97 features a huge 32 GB internal memory which is further extended by a 16GB external memory capacity. Nokia 5800 has a small 81 MB internal memory and an external storage capacity of 16GB. Nokia N97 features a 5 MP camera as against N5800's 3.2 MP camera.
Talking about the physical features, N97 is quite heavier than N5800. N97 weighs 150 gm whereas N5800 weighs only 109 gm.
The screen display technology for both the phones is same however N5800 still does not support desktop widgets but this is something that can be fixed in the future firmware upgrades. N97 supports N-gage gaming platform which is still missing in Nokia 5800 but since both the phones run on a similar hardware, I do not see N-gage a distant probability for N5800.
All in all both the phones have the same technical specifications and if anything is different then it is limited to the full Qwerty keyboard option in N97. The software limitations in N5800 is something that may be eliminated soon.

And one other difference… The N97 uses a mini-USB jack for charging it, something that has now become almost an industry standard. The 5800 uses a coaxial Nokia charger.
You forgot a curious spec about N97.
Although not that useful (at least for me), N97 also includes built-in compass.
if the hardware is the same has anyone tried changing the product code to match n97 n see if they get the n97 screen
It is VERY hard to hear someone talk or comment about VoIP services on Nokia Phones. I got frustated when I bought my 5800 and couldn’t find the settings for VoIP. At that very specific moment all I wanted was to throw my phone against the wall.
Now Nokia has released a software that “unlocks” VoIP on N97. And what I could read is there is some “hardware” to allow voip calls.
So .. this should be another difference between 5800 and N97.
