It’s official – Nokia 5800 has a new firmware upgrade v40.0.005

By Anunay Kumar | January 14, 2010

I know i have been late at putting this up but the sole reason for this was to confirm the authenticity of this upgrade and test it myself. However, i have not been able to test it myself because the new firmware is still not available on the Nokia servers for my region. I have it confirmed on the Nokia Update Finder that the upgrade does exist for my region and others too. Here is a list of all the products codes for Nokia 5800 which are eligible for this new upgrade.

With this new upgrade, we have a similar home screen like that of Nokia 5530. There is the much awaited kinetic scrolling but unfortunately not in the main menu, application menu and the browser which i feel are the main portions where we need kinetic scrolling. Anyways, it is better to have something than nothing at all. As we know with every upgrade, there is a significant touch response and overall performance improvements. Some of the phone menu icons have been changed. On the UI part, there are some additions which include new screen alarm, slide to unlock during call, new screen incoming call when the phone in locked. You also have an updated Real Player and Ovi Contacts installed. Another major change is the removal of the alphanumeric keypad in the landscape mode. Now on moving the phone, the portrait mode alphanumeric keypad changes to the full qwerty keypad.

This is a positive sign for all the Nokia 5800 users as this update has come after a very long time since the last one and proves that Nokia has not forgotten its first touch screen baby.

It’s not working for me in the “Nokia Software Updater”. OTA has not worked for me ever senes the 31.2.101.263.04 update. But i will try and fix it tomorrow and let you know if that works.

  2. CS says:

Update: My brother flashed his to the product code and tried to download on the comp and it wouldn’t work. But when he did the *#0000# and tried to download OTA, it worked. He now has the new update as well.
If this doesn’t work on other RM-428 phones, I don’t know what it is.

CS::Can you list the server profile details for us. NAM users dont have the profile by default.

  4. CS says:

I go into server profiles and it says there are none.

  5. IJK says:

CS , How do you update OTA ?

  6. CS says:

Bring up the dialer, enter *#0000# and up pops a list with all your phone info. Hit options and select “check for updates.” It should connect and tell you whether there is one available or not. Like I said, it still is not available via the computer and I don’t think the European website product code checker reflects it either but it definitely is on mine and my brother’s ophones. Let me know if it works for you.

  7. IJK says:

CS when you check for updates like that you must have a server profile defined which is why you can update. Give us the details of the server profile that you get the updates from and we will also get them then

  8. CS says:

Well, all I can say is that when I go to options-server profiles, I have none defined. If I do options-settings, it says the default server profile is simply “Nokia.” I did buy this phone from a regional carrier but AFAIK, there really hasn’t been any real branding done by the company, though it is locked to the carrier.

  9. IJK says:

That is what I am looking for . NAM users dont have that defined. Can you fill in the lines that say you are not allowed to view the links ?

    Server Name Nokia
    Server ID Nokia
    Server password firmupservpass
Access point [select your Wifi or Tmobile internet AP]

    https://dms.update.nokia.com/dms/omadm is the host address.
http://discussions.nokia-asia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=51913#M51913 is the source where he got it.
Weird because I had the profile originally defined I think and I’m a NAM user. Well, whatever. Let me know if that works. If that’s the case, a whole lot of other people might just be able to get this update.
I’m starting to think a soft reset or hard reset would be a good idea though as my email on the homescreen isn’t working now (did before) and the music player is throwing a fit, along with Ovi Maps crashing.

Tried updating but it says no updates available … Oh well …

  12. CS says:

Sorry to hear that. I really don’t know what it is and how I got it but somehow you can’t. Maybe in a few days.

  13. Travspeed says:

Got my OTA working but it tells me “no updates available”

@CS if you did get updated I find odd it’s the ver. 40.2.005. that’s euro firmware nam fw are usealy diffrent v30 euro vs. v31 nam

  14. CS says:

Well, I did flash many different Euro codes into my phone before I found out that the real difference was Rm356 vs. 428 but other than that, I have no idea. Thing is, my brother only flashed his once (to 0577454) and it worked fine for that.
I just asked my brother and he says his is v40.2.500 as well. This is definitely interesting. Considering it bypasses the carrier totally (it’s a wifi connection) I don’t know what the deal is.

  15. moe says:

its the LTA firmware which is RM-428. its exactly the same as NAM but with different default games. works perfectly on NAM if you change the product code to LTA. upgrades over air.

  16. Anish says:

I’ve updated to latest firmware. I want the full-screen QWERT Typepad back as it was really easy to type messages with hand it-self. Please let me know how to get it back.

  17. Michael says:

Well i updated mine n its working just fine…but with each updates there r still a few flaws.

  18. CS says:

    @Anish
If you rotate the phone, you get the full screen qwerty. Otherwise, in portrait mode, it will default to alphanumeric or the other two options.

  19. Gabo says:

What product code do you use for the upgrade?
