Major Firmware Update -> v20.0.012

By Meraj Chhaya | February 9, 2009

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music got his Major Firmware Update to version 20.0.012. We were able to see some minor updates which made some little changes and corrected some errors, but this Major Update gives to users many new functionalities, applications, improvements and some bugs are now fixed.

You can update here, using your PC, but you can also update via your 5800 with Nokia Software Updater OTA, "over-the-air". Follow the steps below:

Steps to update your Nokia 5800

device_nokia_major_updateIf you get any error, please, do post below in the comments section or visit our forum. This update might not be available around the globe, but in a certain period it will be. If you can't find the update, simply wait some more time :(

This update is focused in some main areas like geo-tagging to the camera application, it also  allows full device search and the use of the front camera for self portraits. In my opinion this are the major changes.

Anyway we have some other changes that many bloggers are noticing all around the web. Ler's list all them:

  • Geotagging information to camera, photo geotagging;
  • Secondary Camera is now available;
  • Dictionary application added, supporting multiple languages;
  • Full device and Internet Search added, even on the Standby Screen;
  • Individual Application Update added , used to upgrade and update only selected Nokia applications;
  • Performance improved in various applications, including Gallery. Those are smoother and faster;
  • Screen rotations are much faster;
  • Nokia 5800 now becomes excellent as a YouTube platform. Is this the "youtube smartphone"? haha -> SmarTube
  • New icons for Podcast, Download, Music and Switch
  • Telephone’s keypad has a new design, as you can see in the image below.
  • Touch screen is better and improved
  • Small bugs were also fixed.

Below you can see in practice what all this changes mean:

    why does my phone say its up to date??? mine’s version is 10.0.010

    both the phone and on the pc the case is the same.. WHY CANT I UPDATE IT???

    i bought it in europe the device code is 052277x.

    help

    • Muhammad says:

      You bought the phone from ebay? or Is it unlocked? If yes, then it’s strange indeed.

      If you bought the phone from a contrat or something, then you need to ask to them. For example, here in Portugal I bouth from Nokia and it is unlocked, but if you buy via TMN, Optimus, Vodafone, you depend on them…

      :)

      • Michal says:

        Well, Nokia 5800 XM was _supposed_ to be sold unlocked and wo/contract… A lot of people using prepaid plans here in Europe – just because DSL is so ubiquitous.

        And my number is 057xxx – no idea where it may be?
        I had German phone when it came, and it was with out of factor firmware date for… (guess) Jan 26th. Version 11.0.08. Anybody can explain this?!

      • Laslo says:

        i buy all my phones thru Telenor, with contract, network locked phones. only nokias. Everytime i was able to update them, but not this one. probably the update for my language pack version of the software is not available yet.

        that seems to me as the most likely explanation.

        but still.

        btw, im loving the phone, but it DOES have glitches. lots of.. :/

  2. log111 says:

    No update in HongKong now. :( Waiting…

  3. airbow says:

    I bought this phone when it was launched. The problems I have faced..

    1. The ear piece speaker is pretty bad. On a call the volume of the ear piece speaker would drop to a very low level, which made hearing the other person impossible. This became a constant problem. I faced this problem in the first two weeks itself. I got the phone replaced, but again 4 weeks later the same problem has come up. The phone has faletered on this critical element, what is the use of the phone if you cannot listen to the other party on the line.

    2. In the maps feature, the satellite terrain photos do NOT come up. All one sees is a green background. Satellite Mapping is missing.

    3. Sometimes when you switch to the camera mode the screen goes black and ask you to reboot the phone.

    4. The phone is very plasticy, especially the back cover is very thin, and the hooks on the back cover are very delicate.

    5. If you end an incoming call, the phone screen goes black immediately and you cannot see the talk time.

    6. Many times, when you want to play videos recorded by you, the video player gets stuck and does not play the video, but the sound of the video plays.

    7. Though the phone has a 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens, night time photos are pretty bad. They are quite snowy.

    8. When you type an SMS and want to send it to someone on your contact list, and if you want to see the phone number of that contact, you cannot see it.

    9. If you call the Nokia helpline on the Bangalore number, they are not knowledgeable to handle your queries. They are a useless bunch of people at the call center, who have NO product knowledge or ability resolve issue. They know how to irritate the hell out of you.

    I am totally unsatisfied with this phone. I would call it a “ibrick”. I am trying to get a complete refund for this phone.

    Email me at rainbow.watching@gmail.com to know more.

  4. Kalpesh says:

    I just checked OTA for update. In india it might be not available yet. :( .
    But thanx for information. I am heavely looking forward for update. :oops:

    • Muhammad says:

      The update was just released, it’s now a question of time :)

      • xtasi says:

        My firmware version is 11.0.0.008. I bought my 5800 from India and checked it just now for update (using the Nikia Software Updater)..but, unfortunately, the software tells me that there is NO UPDATE available currently!! :(

  5. Michal says:

    The same problem:
    Bought cell phone in Germany, and no update available since the phone left factory!

    The phone choice is not even present at support site in nokia.at, nokia.de, nor nokia.ch!

    Since factory firmware is not allowing me to send emails AT ALL, I seriously consider giving the phone back… :-(

    [And I also mailed NokiaCare in Germany, the only thing they could do was to ask me for patience...]

  6. zTony says:

    How come I still only have 4 shortcut bar icon and 2 at bottom ? Everyone got 6 icon shortcut bar with 3 shortcut at bottom after upgrade to v11 or v20. I just update mine to v 20.0.012

    • Meraj Chhaya says:

      Strange. But this is a minimal difference. Right?

      If still want to retry the update, backup all data and then:

      Reset – Use the password 12345. Reset using *#7370#. Reinstall the update again.

    • Mara says:

      4 contact shortcuts at the top is normal, I think
      In the settings you can change the bat at the top from contacts to shortcuts, but as var as I recall, it’s still 4 shortcuts

      Are you sure you’re not comparing with people that added Handy Shell to the Nokia? Handy Shell is a replacement for the default screen (and a must have IMHO, but that’s just me :mrgreen: )

  7. Tony McTony says:

    This update seems to break some custom themes. The UI elements are no longer clickable. Oh well, at least the default one still works.

  8. asd says:

    Games works better now! and Qwerty has bigger buttons!

  9. zTony says:

    Can anyone please confirm is this homescreen is new v 20 or is this Handy shell. He has 6 shortcut bar icon on top with symbian short cut at bottom. Mine only has 4 haha. Thanks

  17. Sumedh says:

    I am from India and got 5800 3weeks back and had the speaker problem and one weird problem that was the alignment of the display which was cross. I spoke my seller and he was helpful in getting me a replacement handset, but unfortunately even the replacement handset had the similar problem with added problem of screen going blank once in a while, and again my seller gave me a 3rd one which has the same problem. The nokia care centers are unable to rectify the problem and asking me to take a replacement. My only concern is how many times do I have to go for replacements. Can someone help me with the problem?. I am from Bangalore and my mail id is sumedh2909@gmail.com

  18. sreedhar says:

    hi i am also facing same problem just got my Nokia recently, I tried the firmware update, it gave me an error, I don’t quite remember the whole phrase, but seems like my service provider is not allowing the update. anyone encountered this problem? I tried update from Phone management->device update, it tells me that no updates available.

    —————————–
    firmware-update-v200012 is for indian customer is there are not
    nokia is made us fools by making this stupid mobile it very slow and it not perform even basic moble functions
    very very stupid phone i brought
    ——————————–
    I think 5800 all over world is similar why the hell these Nokia peoples making practicality between India and other country we are also given same money what other country peoples are given. By giving firmware to other not to Indian, if you just google nokia 5800 problems you will get 1000 of problems still they are not ready to resolve that. That’s why I am telling Nokia is making us (Indians) fools. Simple problems 1)while talking you not able to see time how much your talking
    2) there no option to edited last call
    3)while searching numbers it will not shows the mobile no:
    Soooooooooooo on these are basic functions all other mobile even Noika in other model are there

    ——————————-
    if possible please help me reslove the firmware problem

    • Daniel says:

      Hey dude, whats up?

      I got my device a month ago , and it’s great ! without any problems,
      about your Simple Problems! : 1 > hile talking you not able to see time how much your talking ( Because U should ENABLE this function from the settings! > Phone > Call settings : show call Duration [ change it to ON ] and Summary After Call [ change it to ON ] :wink:
      your Second Problem ( which is weird!) YES , there is Option for Editing your Calls( All calss)

      and your last problem I have no answers because I always searching by Contacts names ..

      and about your Updating Firmware to V 20.0. …. . dont Try Update it with that part of settings in the phone ( Update Device or something like that ) no . forget about Updating it from your device Options , sure it gives U : No Update is available ( or something like that ..)

      >>> TRY : only Updating your device Via Nokia Software Updater ( Nokia PC Suite program) in your Cpmuter by the Internet , first U have to Install this ( Nokia Software Updater into your computer , then Plug in the USB cable to your computer and your Nokia 5800.
      then Open the program ( Nokia software Updater ) which U installed it into your computer .

      then .. it will automaticaly detect your Device and follow On screen Orders ( it tells U that first Back Up your data from your phone ( back it up into memory card) just incase …

      then in 1 or 2 steps , it will Start Downloading and Updating your Device ( which in that Time YOU Should NOT Dissconnect the Cable from your phone and/Or DONT Switch it Off ( because it will Damage your phone during Updating …..)
      and it takes some time the new Firmware file size is About ( 119.5 .. MB ) something like that .. so it takes Time for download and updating .after that it will automaticaly Restart your phone and then FINISH ! enjoy the Fixeed Bug Firmware v20.0….. with All its new Options wich is here in head of this Post .:-)

  19. All you guys who get the “up to date firmware” message, try updating with the Nokia Software Updater and a direct USB connection. I was also getting no new updates when trying to use the OTA option, but the Nokia software found the new update without a problem now that it’s connected to my PC with the supplied cable.

    Warning: the update is a 127.3 MB download!

    Cheers!

  20. Karan says:

    Hi there,

    I bought my Nokia 5800 about three weeks ago in Mumbai, India while I was on vacation there. And now when I’m back to Hong Kong. Today I tried to update my phone, by dialing *#0000# and then I saw my:
    - Software version is V11.0.008
    - Software Version date 09-12-2008
    - Custom Version 11.0.008.red.01
    - Custom Version date is 09-12-2008

    I then went to options and did ‘Check for updates’ and then ‘Website has sent a certificate which out of date. Accept anyway?’ and I selected ‘Accept this time only’ and then it said ‘Receiving data from Nokia’ and then it just said ‘No updates available’. What do I do now? Can someone help please.

    cheers.

    • hendrik says:

      JAF is a software use to change ur product code so that you can receive update. I live in Indonesia I bought my 5800 in Indonesia and I cant update either from NSU or from phone itself. But I search on the forum if you use product code from other country you can update.

      That is why I try using JAF to change my code and I can update… Dont worry it will not void ur warranty and u always can change back to ur original product code, just make sure u keep note of it.

      • febi says:

    Nokia has recently been known to cheat their customers by suplying faulty handsets and although it is known to them they dont bother to recall the device.Not one person in all the forums posted on the net have not had a problem with the device, after only a couple of days of use of the phone.To add to the insult, the nokia care centres dont Care!The nokia handset goes for 399euros and in some shops go for 500euros across europe, after they stated in numerous shows and online videos that the handset would go for 279 euros.After all that hype for an inferior product not worth selling as a toy,nokia should recall all the handsets and refund the peoples money.In this day and age , during the most horrific economic crisis the world has ever seen,for nokia to do something like this is unbeleivable!

    • hendrik says:

      in my opinion, every product not only nokia have their faulty… especially 1st batch… look at apple macbook… my friend bought the very 1st intel based, and u know what… it went to service center for 13 times because of this and that which he dont expect to…

      So if ur happen to get the faulty product, just be patient to taking care of it at NCC, that is why warranty work right?

      may I know what ur nokia 5800 problem ??? Cause I bought mine (maybe the 1st batch, since my software version still 10 when I bought it) and there is no problem at all.

    I tried to update my nokia 5800,( via wifi) from Phone management->device update, it tells me that no updates available. And when i tried it from my nokia software updater it says to download a newer version. i downloaded the same but during installation it gives an error 1720.

  36. UndCOVer says:

    Don’t hold your breath people with v11 or less can update even if the OTA didn’t work and said there is no updates availble because there is. just hook your phone to the USB cable go on the net download the nokia software updater for N5800 from nokia’s site then follow through the steps of update its not availble through OTA because its a big update to download over the air (120MB Approx) don’t forget to soft reset the phone after updating or you’ll have troubles, lots of them.
