With the touch interface of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, MMMOOO's MyPhone software brings the graphic user interface (GUI) of Apple's iPhone to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. Now on version 2.10, Myphone has added new features and fixed previous performance lags. You can see a review we made of MyPhone older version here.
The MyPhone by MMMOOO sports new features such as the Sketchpad app which lets you draw freely using your finger or stylus. Think of it as a simple paint program for your Nokia 5800. The Auto-lock feature enables you to set a time for the phone to lock when you are not using it. You can choose displaying your icons in a 3 x5 or 4 x 5 array with the Alternative List Mode. If you use RSS frequently, there is an exclusive MyPhone RSS reader that looks just like the iPhone's.
Other features include Notifier on Messages and Logs icons, Standy Home Screen with various wallpapers to choose from, country-customizable World Wide Weather Forecast and iPhone-like icons. The MyPhone uses the built-in Flash player software.
Upon launch, you will see the familiar-looking iPhone interface complete with the slider to unlock the phone. Just take your finger and slide it to the right. Just like in old iPhone fashion, the icons appear. The icons look similar to the iPhone's candy icons. To move from one set of icons to another, you just swipe your finger towards one direction and the icons will move. You have about four (4) sets of icon pages. To change the arrangement of the icons, just press the icon of choice for about two seconds and you will notice the icons shaking. Then choose the icon you wish to switch places with.
After testing this software for a week, the Myphone by MMMOO does make your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic look and feel like an iPhone. But remember: the software is only a Graphical User Interface (GUI) launchpad for the basic applications that are in your Nokia 5800. Once you choose an application, you are brought back to the look-and-feel of your Nokia 5800 theme.
Though not as fluid as the iPhone, I have noticed improved response time of the MyPhone v2.0 especially when sliding left or right with the icon pages . Of course, it should not be compared to the real iPhone. But MMMOOO did a very impressive job in pushing the graphical capabilities of the Nokia 5800 to the limit.
However, there are some things to consider.
MyPhone lets you choose only 8 wallpapers for the standby screen and doesn't let you use your own photos for the wallpaper. This would have been a given feature since the Nokia 5800 itself lets you do this.
MMMOOO's MyPhone tries its best to create the GUI look-and-feel of the iPhone on a Nokia 5800 phone. But it needs to do more than just covering the S60 interface. It needs to add value to the phone. Enable it to be more configurable such as letting me use my own photos for wallpapers. Having new applications such as Sketchpad and World Wide Weather Forecast are good additions to the package. Maybe they can add more simple and useful apps like a stopwatch in the next version.
However, MyPhone will not automatically add applications you have installed that do not come with the original Nokia 5800 set of features and applications. You need to manually configure this by downloading and installing a Taskman program to link the 3rd party application to your MyPhone icons.using the Myapp function (which is located on the last page of the Myphone interface). There has to be an easier way to add applications. One of the reasons why the iPhone is so popular is because of its ease of use. But since the MyPhone will take some tinkering, you're stuck with what icons you have on ever slide page unless you know how to configure the taskman.
One suggestion is to have a built-in taskman in the MyPhone so even non-technical users can easily add their chosen application on the MyPhone interface.
Now that this version has improved its graphical user interface, MMMOOO needs to focus on making the MyPhone more than just a GUI swapper but a software that truly enhances the Nokia 5800 experience. You can buy MyPhone here.
