Nokia 5800 App Review: Mail For Exchange with free exchange e-mail

By Anunay Kumar | April 14, 2009

scr000023Nokia 5800 XM comes with a free Mail for Exchange application. This application is not of much use for people who don’t have an exchange based email account.

Before, we proceed further, let’s examine the benefits of having an exchange based account and its usage with Mail For Exchange. Consider a situation where you take a picture and wish to send it right away to a friend. What options do you have? Either you upload the picture on Vox or Nokia M-Blog and then notify your friend. Well, I personally would like an option where I take a picture, select send and select the option to email the picture. Well, of course, a better option is to use MMS but for some networks MMS is highly charged even with an unlimited data plan. This is so because MMS uses a different gateway than your normal data connection. If you have Mail For Exchange installed on your Nokia 5800, you will notice an option “Via Mail For Exchange” when you click on Send after taking a picture. If you select this option, instantly an email would be created with the picture as an attachment and just send the email.

Another benefit of using Mail For Exchange is that there is no size limitation on the attachment or scr000024its type. In some countries there is a size limit on the size of MMS that you send, which is less than 1MB. So if you want to send a number of pictures together, then you may have to send in multiple MMSes. Or the better option is to use the Zip Manager on your phone and zip it to a single file and send it as an email which would use the normal internet connectivity and would not have any size limitations. You can also browse through your phone or card memory and select any file type you wish and send it via Mail For Exchange.

Now we come to the main question, where do we get a free exchange based email account to use with Mail For Exchange. Mail2Web .com is an email provider which provides a free Microsoft Exchange 2007 based email account on a trial basis for 2 months. After the trial period they charge a very low charge of 4.95$/month that’s almost 60$ around the year. Previously, the site was providing a completely free Microsoft Exchange 2003 based account with mobile sync but then they upgraded to Exchange 2007 and put up a monthly fee.

Some of the features that come with the trial account are, Outlook Web Access client, Plenty of Storage with support for large attachments, Anti-Virus and SPAM Filtering, Messaging, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Mobile Device Synchronization with ActiveSync, Import your existing Contacts, Manage Other Email Accounts and change your From Address, POP3, IMAP and SMTP Support (activated after your trial period).

Sign up for a free trial account here.

Settings for Mobile For Exchange application are as given below:

1) Install Mail For Exchange Software into Nokia 5800. The program will show up in the Folder called mfe.
2) Create a new profile by clicking Options / New Profile.
3) Click Connection. Then enter the following:

Use default port: Yes
Click Back and then choose Credentials. Then enter following:

Peak sync schedule: Choose how often you want your email pushed into your phone.
Off-peak sync schedule: Choose whatever you want (I use manual because off-peak, I am outside the office. This means I check it myself. I only have the mail pushed to me during office hours.)
Peak Start time: whatever time you want peak to start.
Peak end time: whatever time you want peak to end so automatic push is disabled.
Peak Days: can be every day. I only use work days or Monday to Friday.
Click Back and choose Email. Then enter following.
Email Address: Your mail2web email address (username@mail2web.com)
Show new mail pop-up: up to you
Use signature: Up to you
Signature: Whatever signature you want to appear when you write emails through your phone.
When sending mail: up to you (I chose send immediately)
Sync messages back: up to you (I chose 1 weeek)
Click Back twice to exit.

Now you are done with that.

Note: The above setting is for Microsoft Exchange 2003. There may be some changes, find updated details in your account settings (once you sign up for the trial).

Works fine… the only drawback is that you can only define one Exchange account (no personal/business account for example).

  2. Mike Bowen says:

alternatively you could install the new Nokia Messaging (which is free) and send photos, text, notes, attachments etc with this application. It’s an awesome application that integrates directly into the 5800XM.

Will Nokia 5800 work with Lotus notes data traveler so that corporate emails could be received and sent?

  5. Maurice says:

    Hi Krishna R,

Nope, I have a 5800 myself and got traveller installed but you cannot complete configuration. a Nokia 5800 is 5th generation and you need a 3rd gen device. Just like it is listed on the IBM site:
    http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/26130.wss
Maybe with a later release, but the latest Traveller 8.5 does not work on 5th generation

  6. Joao Pereira says:
