With 5800s sporting an impressive 3.2" TFT screen with a resolution of 360 x 640, it can be used as a backup torch. One would have to use a a very bright/plane white wallpaper to be able to use 5800 as a torch but this will drain the battery at an alarming rate and a plain white wallpaper doesn't do justice to 16 million colours that our 5800 screen is capable of rendering. All these issues can be addressed by relying on an application which can bring torch light like functions to our 5800s. Thanks to MMMOOO (yeah, the same guys who developed MyPhone) for bringing Ever Light to S60 5th edition devices. It has to be noted that Ever Light is considerably different than its nearest competitor Phone Torch by relying on the 3.2" screen as a light source rather than the LED of camera flash as with Phone Torch. Lets now dwell into the nitty-gritty of Ever Light on 5800s.
Installation
Ever Light is a paid application costing USD 7.99 and can easily be downloaded from MMMOOO webpage here. Installation is a breeze with the customary clicks regarding "untrusted application" and "application wants to access user data", gosh Nokia needs to fix this nagging isssue which is turning out to be as annoying as Windows Vista's User Account control, prompting users everytime a new software is installed or an installed software tries to use one of the ports. Lets not talk about that and stick to Ever Light on 5800.
Features
Ever Light has a very simple but effective single screen controls, bringing all the control options to the homescreen. The screenshot to the right shows what Ever Light has labeled as "Lights" mode. There are a total of five colours to chose from for this "Lights" mode and one has to just tap on the second icon from the left at the bottom of the screen to change colours in "Lights" mode
The first icon on the left at the bottom of the screen lights up the entire screen with a single colour and there are 12 colours to chose from for this "Single colour" mode. The item description does mention about being able to use Ever Light as a mirror but I wasn't able to find any option for this in the application. One of the reviewers in ovi store does mention that Ever Light can be used as a mirror by selecting black in the "Single Colour" mode but I found that this doesn't make a good mirror. I would be very happy if any of the readers can figure out a way to use Ever Light as a mirror.
The third icon from the left at the bottom enables" twinkling screen" which is basically a flickering screen which can be very effectively used as an SOS signal in the dark. Just orienting your 5800 in landscape mode will turn on this twinkling screen.
One can hide/unhide the controls from the homescreen by just tapping on the tiny-winy hide soft button and help soft button explains all the modes and how to go about using them.
Pros
- Fully optimized for touch screen browsing
- Well designed homescreen bringing all the control options to one screen
- Twinkling screen is a great feature which can effectively used as a SOS call in dark
Cons
- The soft buttons: "About us", "Hide", "Help" are very tiny and not optimized for finger touch browsing
- Where is mirror mode? (Readers please help)
Verdict
Ever Light is a very easy to use application which can backup as a torch light during those hiking trips when you run out of torches/batteries on your torches. I really like the homescreen design and the concept of bringing all controls to just one screen and the "Help" menu explains all the features in a simple and concise manner. The item description in ovi store does mention that it helps to save battery which am assuming refers to the battery of the torch and not of 5800. This can be considered as an eco-friendly alternative to torches as 5800 battery can be recharged several times. While its not really fair to compare Ever Light with Phone Torch as they use different light sources, Phone Torch does have some points going for it like Morse code (more for fun rather than utility), LED technology is known to be lighter on battery consumption compared to LCD TFT technology and its totally free. Ever Light does have an edge over Phone Torch with its wider gamut of light colours (12/5 depending on the mode) to Phone Torch's (2: white and red, a hardware limitation rather). To sum it all up, Ever Light is a very well written application letting the users use 5800 as a full fledged torch. If you are a compulsive torch user, please go ahead and buy this application from the ovi store and even if you are not this a fun application to play around and flaunt in parties (esp the twinkling screen). Download and buy the Ever Light here.

I Like Phone Torch a lot better.. the main reason cuz it’s totaly free.. and i think it does a better lightning on LED’S than on a screen.
5800 can be used as a mirror, and one don’t need any third party software for it. Just open your camera, switch to front side camera and turn your phone upside down in front of your face.
7.99 for something that is going to rip through the battery vs a free product that does work as a simple torch…mmmmm let me see…..
