Nokia 5800 App Review: PhoneTorch

By alex | March 10, 2009

phonetorchscreen1PhoneTorch is a really interesting app that uses the lamp torch ability of the Nokia 5800 (using the LED) to light up the surroundings (in white or red) and to send Morse code, which is kind of a fun option. The reason why you can't use Xenon flashes for lamp torches on mobiles phones is because the temperature would get too high, and could damage the phone. This will also work on the N97.

The UI is really simple and gets the job done with some big buttons (Start/Stop for instance). You can also access the Switch Color, the Morse function, the Settings and the Update menu from the homescreen, which is quite useful. I personally believe that simple user interfaces are really important, and they are all the more important that the application itself is doing something as simple as "Turning on the lamp of your phone".

This app is still in beta so expect some changes and improvements. Having a quick look at the Morse option, we realize that it is still really simple. The upper part is for typing the message you want to "send", them you've got a "Cancel sending" and a "Send" button : as easy as ABC...

This Morse option is quite a good idea, this idea was already used on one of the ideas of widgets submitted to the Nokia Widget Competition by a french blogger : .

Ehrm, just for the record, Xenon lights won’t. EVER. Become warm. If they get, well you can easily say that it’s not xenon.

A pratical example where Xenon lamps are used is in cars, theyre there for the sole purpose of not heating up. As regular lights do. So trust me on this, if your “xenon” light phone gets hot, well, uve got fucked bigtime. It aint any xenon light in it.

SE K750i has this feature (including the SOS blinking) build in? I now have a K550i and that too has this feature build in. This is a freaking 99 euro dumb-phone.

How come 400 euro suposedly-SMART phone hasn’t build this in?
It’s nice to finally see an application filling the gap though.

The same is through for +500 euro HTC Touch Pro (the only HTC phone with LED lamp, btw). That too hasn’t got a feature to use the LEDflash as a lamp (except with third party software). I noticed that the equally expensive Samsung Omnia is the only Smart-phone can use the lamp as flash though. In fact you can assign one o/t buttons to toggle it on/off. That’s what I’d like to see in ALL smart phones with a LED-flash.
