Nokia 5800 App Review: Skype has an official version for Nokia 5800

Skype for Nokia 5800

Skype is a very popular brand in the voice and chat communications space with ever increasing customer base. Skype provides voip services in most of the internet savvy countries at nominal rates. So far the only option that we had for using skype was Fring. Even if there were a few other semi-compatible Skype applications, they did not help the Nokia 5800 users exploit the Skype services completely. With the official release of the Skype application for Nokia 5800, Skype is all set to add a large number of Nokia users to its services.

What does skype offer with its official application for Nokia 5800?

  • Free Skype to Skype calls on your phone using 3G or the WiFi network respectively.
  • Share pictures, videos and files with your Skype friends.
  • Full contact list access - same as available on the PC Skype.

What Skype for Nokia 5800 does not offer?

    • No Video Chat

One of the popular services on Skype includes video chat which is not available on this official release. This is however disappointing to hear because Fring being a 3rd party application manages to provide video chat to Skype users on Nokia 5800. I hope the developers at Skype are working on it and ready to deliver a better quality video chat than Fring. Download Skype for Nokia 5800

Why would you really want this application?

    • Everyone loves saving money.
    • It is really great to avoid hefty roaming charges with Skype where in you can use a public WiFi hotspot so make and receive calls and also send SMS. These WiFi hotspots are more common at the airports and big shopping malls.

Please provide us with your comments on the user experience of this new application from Skype.

Despite the comment above Fring was not the only alternative to Skype. Nimbuzz provides a superior alternative when it comes to voice and chat, the only thing Fring offers more is the video chat – I use both apps (and now Skype as well) but Nimbuzz is still my standard despite Skypes new offering, as with most of the populace, I subscribe to more that one IM provider and so far have not seen the need to run an app providing support for a single provider.

    2. Simon says:

Is this Skype for all networks or is it just for the 3 network?

    3. Rodrigo says:

I went to the download page for skype and i never knew which 1 to dowload since there is no “Skype for Nokia 5800″, you just get this options:

      Skype for Symbian
      Nokia N800/N810
      Nokia N900
      iPhone
      Skype on PSP®

Ne help on which to download to get the most compatibility?

    4. Meraj Chhaya says:

      Hi
I can connect via 3G but want to use the wifi connection, but seem unable to.
Any one able to provide an idiots guide?
For me wifi is the only affordable option.
