Nokia 5800 App Review: Tweets60 v1.22

8 June 2009Entry by Sushant Ghargi 1,616 views 2 Comments

"Tweet"ing has really caught up with the internet crowd today. Not being on twitter is being looked down upon with the same disdain as someone who doesn't own a mobile phone these days. Such is the popularity of "twitter", that one of the hottest applications across several mobile platforms today are several twitter clients letting users tweet, right from their mobile phones. Tweets60 v1.22 is one such twitter client bringing "tweet" functions to Nokia 5800s for free.

Installation

Tweets60 v1.22 can be downloaded for free from their official website here. The installation (.sisx file) is just 107 kb, making it easier and economical (if you are on a pay as you use data plan) to download right from your mobile browser. It took me like 5 s on opera mini over wi-fi to download this application. Installation is pretty straightforward with the customary warnings for untrusted application and data access permissions. In all, download and installations shouldn't take more than 20s on our 5800s.

Features

The first thing you need to do once you install this application on your 5800, is to enter your login information for twitter profile. You need to sign in only once, very much similar to most of the mobile "social networking" clients on most mobile platforms today. The second setting I would suggest to configure is to set the access point to "none defined". This will prompt the user to select access point of one's choice. Now you are all set up start "tweet"ing from your 5800s.

The interface has been very well designed with a multi-line display showing tweets, profile name as well as the profile photos of your twitter friends. Most of the basic twitter functions (tweet, retweet, direct message, follow, unfollow) are provided as can be seen from the screen shot to the right. There is even an option to keep a tab on all your old posts, right from the client.  All these functions work more fluently on this application compared to performing similar functions on a mobile browser. This is one of the compelling reasons for downloading this application on your 5800s.

Many a times, users tweet URLs and tweeting URLs is increasingly being used to promote websites and blogs over internet. Tweets60 lets users follow a link in a tweet, without leaving the application. The way it works is very simple: you tap on the tweet with the embedded link and popup appears at the bottom of the screen. Users just need to tap on the highlighted (or rather hyper-linked) link to open the link in the default symbian browser. The screenshot to the left should illustrate my point.

In addition to bringing basic twitter functions to our 5800s, the application also provides certain value added features like optimum battery and data usage. Lets now dwell into the pros and cons of this application.

Pros

  1. Very well designed interface making tweeting from 5800 as simple as sending ae SMS
  2. Most of the basic twitter functions can be performed much faster than from a browser
  3. Support for opening embedded URLs from tweets directly from the application

Cons

  1. No support for multiple accounts
  2. No option for tweet search
  3. Doesn't support services like TwitPic, TwitGoo which are used extensively on twitter

Verdict

Tweets60 v1.22 has a very practical and aesthetically designed interface which is fully optimized for finger touch browsing. Most of the basic tweet functions are supported along with battery and data usage optimization. With support for following embedded URLs from a tweet to the default symbian browser, Tweets60 provides seamless tweeting experience on 5800s. In comparison to other twitter clients available on s60 v5 today, it only loses to exhaustive feature set provided by some of the paid twitter clients. Considering the feature set of free twitter clients, Tweets60 v1.22 is the best free twitter client for symbian 5th edition devices today. If you are new to twitter, Tweets60 is definitely the best twitter client for you, which can be downloaded from here.
