Yes, you heard it right, Nokia has offered free lifetime navigation on these compatible phone models - Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, E72, E55, E52, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5230. Nokia 5800 now has a free turn by turn navigation with voice and visual guidance across 70 countries. Of-course, this has come late but Nokia has finally kept our faith in it. Iphone was launched with free navigation and Google Maps already had a free version for Nokia 5800. With strict competition with other brands offering free navigation, this is a bold move from Nokia.
Not just the navigation, all the related features are free too, like free weather updates, free lonely planet and michelin guides. 2010 is all set to witness a new business strategy from Nokia. I would say that the latest firmware update and now free navigation are nice gifts for all the Nokia 5800 fans.
The new Nokia Ovi Maps with free navigation has an online mode toowhich allows you to get your location without downloading the maps on the go. It works somewhat like Google Maps. There is a bad news for all those Nokia 5800 owners who have still not updated to the firmware version 31.0.008 or higher. The new Ovi Maps is compatible only with the latest firmware v31.0.008 or higher.
I wish you a very happy navigational weekend. It is one more reason to get ASAP a car holder for Nokia 5800. Go and explore with the new free navigation service from Nokia. I know it must be hurting guys with Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition who paid more to get a lifetime navigation. To download visit the new Ovi Maps, visit http://nokia.mobi /maps on your phone's browser or click here to download directly on your PC.

I was excited to hear this, but sadly, it’s crashing my phone. When I run it, my phone turns off. I’ve even tried uninstalling and re-installing, but every time I run Maps, the phone just shuts off.
woah! first an upgrade and now free sat nav nokia are on a roll. 5800s kicking ass
I like it. The main menu is MUCH better and the whole free navigation is just unreal. Excellent job.
But I am suffering to some kind of bug like Brian because when I exit out of it, my phone shuts off. I’m sure they’ll release some kind of patch soon though.
Nice job overall. I am very pleased with the new maps, especially since it can work offline and now guide you, unlike Google Maps (which was my previous favorite).
Now just get me my v40 update for RM-428 Nokia!
Damn I’ve just bought a Ndrive software last month… What about those who payed for a year license, will they get a refund?
Anyway it’s a great move Nokia. Show Google and Apple who rulez.
I just wished they could say if this offer would extend to include the N97 (not the N97 mini) later on after a new update or something or if they aren’t going to include it at all, witch would a real shame.
@Helder: I guess you could contact the Nokia support and ask them about a refund?
This makes very clear why Nokia is losing in the smartphone market war: The OVI Maps just makes the GPS data unaccessible! Neither my 5800 XM, nor the E71 of one of my friends is able to locate the current position within a finite amount of time…
I have no problem with OVI Maps in my 5800XM so this makes very clear that you’re the problem. Format your phone and memory card and try again. You know sometimes there are weird bugs in these devices so try to fix them and stop bitching!
Hey Andras, my phone works great, maybe it’s the GPS in your phone. The GPS on my phone it’s very slow, but when I connect with A-GPS it’s really fast and works great.
Iphone didnt come with free maps … Correction…
my 5800XM works just fine …
OVI Maps on my 5800XM is very accurate and fast, and also the new update works flawless.
Greetings to all from Italy
my also works just fine…
FYI, if you want faster tracking from the GPS, go to location->positioning preferences and change the server from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com
It picks up the satellites much quicker and seems more responsive.
CS, when I changed my Location Server to Google’s, Nokia/Ovi Maps started crashing the phone (powered itself off!). I tried everything before someone suggested switching back to Nokia’s, which I’ve done and now it works just fine.
OVI Maps works fine on my 5800XM. I’m using FW 31.0.101 and comfortably run both Fring, Gravity & JB Taskman in the background. Very stable FW, though looking forward to vers 40. OVI maps is a terrific service. This phone has been on the market for well over 1 year and it still is one of the best value- smartphones out there.. Great job Nokia.
Hi:
same for my nokia 5530
just install nokia maps and my cel phone just went off….
i guess i need to upgrade my vesion..
bye
has.anyone.got.it.working offline mine just.says ‘route cannot be found’
Route can’t be found if you do not have a data plan or out of Wi-Fi range. Even if you have an internet connection destination can be found faster if you have a Assisted GPS function on what also could mean hidden charges over your phone service provider. I owe Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and 5800 Navigation edition. I live in California. In both cases with search of specified location even with Internet access (Wi-Fi) waiting for GPS takes forever (3-5 minutes). Without Internet connection specified by you address in off line mode can be found only by Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition. I’m holding both phones right now. Both have the same settings and same address to be found. 5800 Navigation Edition has found several variants of address and original 5800 XpressMusic still in the search.
The maps are great, but sometimes the turn by turn suggestme go in the wrong way, I think they have to update the traffic directions. (Monterrey, Mexico)
QUESTION: is there ANY difference between the original 5800 and the newer navigation edition now that this update is out in terms of the software itself? For instance, does the 5800 NAV show 3D images OR does the original 5800 show traffic now?
QUESTION: so if lifetime maps come free with both versions of the Nokia 5800, is there any reason to get the Navigation Edition? Are there any other advantages to the Navigation Edition other than “free traffic updates” and “car suction mount”? … (better battery life???)
@Brian
That appears to be the problem. I guess when they updated Maps they did something about having a different server than Nokia’s. Thanks for the tip. Seems to work fine now.
Now I can’t get it to stop crashing. I try to download drive guidance or whatever, or even log in and it just restarts the phone. I hope they put out an update soon or something.
I did the upgrade but if i want to navigate i still hav to pay.
How did youmanage to get the service for free?
