Wimbledon 2009 is just a month from now and I guess most of the tennis lovers are looking forward to it. Wanna flaunt your tennis skills on your 5800? It doesn't get any better than a free game, officially licensed from Wimbledon, does it? Wimbledon 2009 is a free java based game fully optimized for touch screen gaming.

Installation

Wimbledon 2009 is available as a free download from mobicreed. Its a java based application and as in case of most of the java applications on 5800, the D-pad is "ON" by default, holding up on precious screen space. Infact its not possible to play Wimbledon 2009, with the D-pad as almost half the screen is blocked by D-pad. For getting rid of the D-pad, follow the instructions from earlier post. After making this setting, the welcome screen of Wimbledon 2009 looks something like this:

You can start playing straight away without having to bother about reading the control options for there is a training when the first time you play the game. There is a virtual semi-transparent D-pad on the screen facilitating gameplay without compromising on the screen space:

Gameplay is fairly easy with the controls similar to the most of the Tennis games available on video game consoles today. One of the best features of this game is the trivia and hints that are displayed during the game start up and end.

It does like 15-20 seconds to load which may be a bit frustrating at times.

The hints are very helpful but I think it would have made more sense, if hints were displayed before the start of the match and trivia towards the end. After each shot, there is a description of the shot and relevant statistics are displayed after each set.

The game has some customizable options like adding a player of your own with relevant skills.

One biggest flaw in the game is its lack of support for gameplay on portrait mode. In portrait mode the following message is displayed on the screen:

Pros

1. Fully optimised for full screen, finger touch gameplay
2. Intuitive control options
3. Various gameplay options ranging from singles/doubles, lawn/hard/clay court, customization of players etc
4. Decent commentry

Cons

1. Not so impressive graphics for the resolution supported by the screen of 5800
2. Takes a long while to load and exit from game
3. Cannot play in Portrait mode
4. Startup sounds are irritating at times

Verdict

Wimbledon 2009 is a good java based game on Nokia 58oo and has smartly used the transparent D-pad for gameplay. Though the graphics is not very impressive, Wimbledon 2009 will find a fan following from die hard tennis fans. Overall its a decent game with easy gameplay and fully optimized for finger touch browsing.
