Nokia 5800 Help Guide: Back up and synchronize your contact information with ZYB

By Anunay Kumar | August 19, 2009

ZYB is another free sync service that works pretty much the same way as Ovi Sync does. One of the shortcomings with ZYB is that it allows you to backup only Contacts. Photos can be backed up but then you need to MMS them to your unique ZYB account id. You can backup SMS by forwarding your messages to a unique number.

The main reason I have stressed on ZYB is that there are not many sync services for Nokia phones that are free. Most of the services that are free are mostly new on the internet so their reliability quotient is pretty low. ZYB has recently become a partner of Vodafone which raises its reliability quotient. Also, ZYB integrates with Face book, Twitter, Flickr, etc. ZYB has a large database of active users so we can trust the service being free for a lot longer period. However, the product has been launched with a view to provide a completely free backup and sync service so I think it’s a rare chance that it becomes a paid service in future.

Using ZYB with Nokia 5800

1. We start by visiting http://zyb.com on your computer. Click on SIGN UP

2. You need to choose the phone brand first. Select the Nokia from the dropdown box and Type “5800” in the text box. This brings up the Nokia 5800 phone which you need to click to proceed further.

3. Fill out all the necessary details and click on CONTINUE

4. ZYB sends out a configuration SMS to your phone which you need to save and setup your sync profile.

G. Click on NETWORK CONNECTION -> USER DEFINED. Select your data connection (Access Point).

H. Now, click on SYNCHRONISATION TYPE. You have three options which decide which database to be updated, "Both" or "Server Only" or "Phone Only". You can choose anyone as per your preference. I suggest you choose "Server Only" which ensures that only changes on your phone get updated to ZYB.

I. Select OPTIONS -> SYNCHRONISE

Scr000095Scr000096Note: One of the interesting things is that when you are synchronizing, you can actually see each of your contacts getting displayed on your Computer Screen as they get synchronised.

Now, you have successfully setup your ZYB Sync profile. Every time you need to sync, your simply need to go to the Sync Menu and select Synchronise. After the synchronise, all your contacts can now be seen on your home page.

5. After synchronise, you reach the GET STARTED page. Click on GO TO ZYB.COM

6. Click on the PEOPLE tab to view your contacts that have got uploaded to the ZYB server. You can add, delete, modify your contacts and sync them to your phone.

Guys, now we are all done uploading/synchronising the contacts from Nokia 5800 via ZYB Sync. There are a few more options that are free for Nokia 5800. I will be writting a post on those as well. In the meanwhile, do let me know of your thoughts by posting your comments and views. Also, do let me know if you have any queries on using ZYB Sync.

why would somebody do that? I would never trust a website like “ZYB”
I do sync my contacts with an online page and this is gmal (google mail)
If you want instructions for doing this with gmail without installing any programs go here:

Now…what we really need is for someone to talk about how to create a Server Profile, or at least explain what it is so that we can update our firmware thru our phones.
