I have never seen such an overwhelming response to any of the previous firmware upgrades as this one. This really proves the strength of Nokia's fan base and expectations from it. We all know that the firmware upgrade is out but still there are large number of Nokia 5800 phones which are not eligible for this upgrade and that unfortunately includes mine too. I am giving out a step by step guide on how to change your phone's product. I have researched a lot and come to a conclusion that changing your phone's product code may get you the new firmware and every thing will work fine. However, i read testimonials from some people over the internet who said they messed up with their phone after upgrading to the firmware upgrade v40.0.005 by changing their product code. Thus, changing the product code and upgrading the firmware is completely the phone owner's responsibility. I have changed my phone's product code to 20 different codes but unluckily my phone does not seem get the latest upgrade via Nokia Software Updater. You can try your luck too. Although, there is a large group of people who have successfully changed their product code to an eligible one and then upgraded and switched back to their original product code.
My Suggestion
Use this guide if you have warranty period lapsed and have no other service contracts with Nokia because changing the product code would render your device ineligible for any warranty contracts which came with the device. Make sure you are not a very very basic computer user. Try this guide if you wish to try new stuff and experiment with your device which i love doing.
Pre-requisites :-
Nokia PC Suite (Install this first) - Click to download
Nokia Software Updater (Install this second) - Click to download
NSS Software (Install this third) - Click to download
(While installing NSS do not change any default options, mainly Virtual USB mode. Go on with the flow clicking next at each level of the installation.)
You need to follow the order of the installation only to avoid any driver installation issues with NSS. This is how i installed and it worked without issues so lets have it this way.
STEP 1
Connect your phone via USB in PC Suite mode to your computer. Make sure PC Suite and NSU are NOT running. Launch NSS. Click on the 'SCAN FOR NEW DEVICE' button.
STEP 2
Click on the 'Phone Info' button.
STEP 3
Click on the 'Scan' button. Once you click on scan if you have done everything right then you should see the phone details getting populated as shown.

STEP 4
Click on the READ button and the Production Data Edit fields should get populated with your current product code.
STEP 5
Key in your new product code in the Product Code field and check the ENABLE check box and click on WRITE button. This will change your product code for the phone and you can click on READ button again which should now show you the updated product code. If you see the new product code then you are done and now you can close NSS and head over to the NSU (Nokia Software Updater) to update your firmware. Download the eligible product codes for Nokia 5800 firmware Upgrade v40.0.005

Please post your comments and queries on this help guide. Wish you all the luck so that you get your latest firmware upgrade meanwhile i will keep waiting till its officially released in my country.

fwiw, if I use nokia update it never ends the download i.e. it starts saying x/153mb downloaded then the “x” changes. It will look as if it is downloading but then it will suddenly changes to a lower “x”. the download never seems to end.
Tonight i will just let it download thru the night and see what has happened in the morning. I will try this before I try any flashing.
hi ryan i’m having the same problem here..
how did you get this fixed? im still stuck with v31 my update manager wont stop downloading ughhhhh
wh
y is this happening
Hey Stellar, after many failed attempts to upgrade fw I discovered that with NAVIFIRM i could download ANY fw, about 150mb each, and then flash the 5800 via usb to any of the fw’s
I’m loving it! 3 things, 1: BACK UP ALL YOUR 5800 DATA! EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP! 2: look at the links at end of this reply for info wrt NAVIFIRM & Phoenix 2010, save them for reference. 3: make sure you don’t mind trashing your 5800 warranty if you have one.
Downloading the fw is the longest bit, the flashing takes 5 mins.

last address is for an N97 but just look for the similarities and substitute, if I can do it you shouldn’t have a problem
Please make sure you have a clean backup of you 5800′s files, contacts etc as I deleted somw by accident and now i’m stuck with older restore points
Have fun.
yeyyy thanks a bunch, Ryan! ^_^ i’ll try that now!
I found Phoenix 2010 here and the instructions for 2009 work for 2010.8.4.41526. iirc there were pages that needed to be left open, sponsors of sorts i guess

thanx man that realy helped alot now finally i can change my firmware you are the best thanx a lot
p.s im so happy XD
Cool, enjoy! v50.0.5 ROCKS!!!!!
NAVIFIRM & Phoenix 2010 are FANTASTIC and so easy to use, designers of those SW are champs in my books
Thanx to NAVIFIRM and latest Phoenix I’m spinning with v50.0.5

NAVIFIRM takes a little while to download the SW of choice but Phoenix is zippy!
VODAFONE is history too!
so much thank you, it’s working
Ryan, can you tell us how you lanaged to update to v50 with navifirm and phoenix ?
Thnaks.
It took me some time to find find the latest Phoenix SW and the site I found with instructions gave only instructions for SW upgrade of Nokia N97
I was getting desperate so took a chance and downloaded a v50.0.5 through NAVIFIRM then followed instructions for N97. I.ve heard frome some ppl that flashing can brick a mobile but someone with more tech knowledge will need to confirm the risks when using “Phoenix Service Software 2010.8.4.41526″.
For me the NAVIFIRM download took a long tine to complete but the setting up files and flashing my 5800 took only a few minutes!
not sure if I can post links but the sites I used for Phoenix were:

Hope this helps and good luck!

i tried to scan after clicking ‘phone info’ but still i couldn’t get the list of info on the left box so I can change the product code on NSS. Any solutions? Do i have to install the driver like what the NSS installation required? If yes, I couldn’t detect ‘Federal One USB device’. Please advice!!!

I have changed the product code but not able to upgrade to v50. NSU says you can’t upgrade. Your operator blah blah doesn’t allow….
its use full! thank you so much! i change my product code to malaysia, and i reinstall my firmware, and i can read and write chinese now! thumbs up!!
can this nss software be used to downgrade ur firmware by using a older version code and then using nsu for reinstalling same updated software on phone
I have not been able to downgrade FW although have not tried more than once. I find that every now and then, like 3 times iirc, my battery all of a sudden goes flat in less than half a day with very litle use of the mobile phone
I think it is actually just me accidentally unlocking the phone ase I put it in my pants pocket and then I guess the screen stays on because itis constantly being pressed by my leg or something in my pocket. That is just a guess though as the first 2 times the battery went flat very quickly i performed a hard reset and everything was fine for a while. The last time though I just put the phone on charge and monitored it until I got board and the battery lasted the usual day and a half.
A bigger problem I have had is the darn phone book and OVI some how duplicating contacts as well as duplicating numbers for contacts
It’s a real pain clearing the phone-book up
Really appreciate this article which gives a step-by-step process of upgrading to v50. Read this article and was able to do the upgrade very smoothly without any problems.
Thanks again..
THANKS A MILLION BUDDY !!!!!!!!
