We receive information that Nokia has released or will be releasing a new software update for your lovely Nokia 5800. The news just came out today and Nokia claims that it will further improve the phone's performance and new functionalities will be added.
Noticed that I also said will be releasing, because when I read the article it sound like it has been released and already available for update. First thing came in to my mind is, which version is affected, Europe, NAM, India, or what? Also I checked and nothing about the firmware was mentioned. So I immediately tried the OTA update, and of course "no update available". I connected my PC suite, which I was asked to update my "software updater", after that it says. No updates available. Still showing available V20. It made me think that maybe there are only informing us of the future updates coming up soon.
According to the press release, it will improve Internet download and the interface would be faster. Better in-device search, hopefully faster. Also better email experience. Here are the some of the additional feature that should be included on the update:
- Faster user interface and faster download times
- New camcorder features: second camera support for still image capture in addition to video calls, burst mode that allows people to take multiple pictures one after another without needing to repress the picture taking button
- Mobile Dictionary: built-in dictionary functionality with voice playback of words utilizing text-to-speech technology, support for 38 languages
- Application Update: with Application Update people can check for available updates for applications and update them directly in the device. Applications can also be kept up-to-date by setting the checking to automatic.
Personally there is not as much information or update, that some of us are expecting. To me this is not as clear as actually saying, "Here's firmware so and so for you Nokia 5800, and so on and so forth". Like I said I tried already and nothing yet. So anyone out there that was able to and successfully install a new firmware let us know and post it here. Until then we are all be waiting.

hey, yeah no update 4 my phone which i bought from UAE (Dubai). i got the altest firmware v20.something xD
they should put a working version of Nokia Paint Pad on there. Not one that doesn’t work in the APAC region and says that HK error whenever you try to save.
Every non-Nokia touch screen phone has a paint pad app where you can draw allover photos. EVERY ONE.
Even the DSI does it and that has .3 of a megapixel camera.
Hurry up Nokia.

These features were part of the firmware upgrade v20. I have been seeing rumors about v21 of the firmware where camera improvements, home screen redesign are expected.

V20 is the latest firmware. My 5800 NAM came with latest firmware and all the above said feature do exist. and sure the phone is very good in responsiveness. I am happy with it (though I could not figure out how to get the accuweather widget to work on wifi)

Looks like it’s V20, but the press released was dated yesterday Mar. 30 and it mentioned something new about the camera, so like everyone else, we’ll be checking. I just hope that eventually they can make the home screen to look like N97 home screen. That would be pretty sweet!

Hi, i just bought my red tube 3 weeks ago in malaysia and i currently have this problem. Whenever i call someone in loudspeaker mode, the other person on the line complains that as if my line reception is not good and the volume often goes loud and soft and sometimes none at all on the other person’s side. I tried using other lines and phones but only this phone had the same persistent problem. Is anyone else experiencing this problem as well??? Is it a software or hardware defect?

have to say that I have the same issue as you do and is nothing that connected to earpiece. the problem is with the mic. I called today my network provider and they admited that there’s a known issue with the 5800 – maybe not an issue but some hardware disadvantage. it turns out that the mic on this model is a one way, not 2 way. it means that when you on loud speaker, if the person you speaking with is speaking, he cannot hear you because it’s a one way…
so, we have to live with that shit :\
Some lots come with defective ear speaker problem.
Now NOKIA has changed the supplier for ear piece.
My phone had the same problem.
Nokia service center will change the ear speaker free of cost. Hence do waste time in further searching.

Henry.t sounds like it is hardware fault.
Google “nokia earpiece fault” or something and there’s plenty of instructions including youtube videos.
Basically a contact is loose between the speaker and the circuit board, you have to open the phone and bend the contact pins a bit to get the connection solid. No soldering required, watch the video its not too bad.
Its a well known issue unfortuantely

Hi! I’ve got an irritating high frequent sound from my earpiece. An easy way to hear the difference (no sound/sound) is by holding the phones “earside” tight against the ear and switching the keylock on/off.
Are you guys/gals experiencing this as well?
