Nokia 5900 Xpress Music Anyone?

By Sushant Ghargi | May 12, 2009

Leaked pictures of Nokia 5900 Xpress Music phone have been all over the internet over the last weekend, including in some of the reputed websites like engadget and slashgear. The rumoured upgrade to Nokia 58oo boasts of a 3.5 inch screen, 5 megapixel camera, 3.5 mm jack, symbian 5th edition OS (speculated specs as of now).  All the specs have been borrowed from this orignal post in a chinese forum (thanks to google for translation). My first reaction on reading this post was to question the authenticity of the post. It can easily be a "NOKLA" set than an authentic "NOKIA" set for all I know. I have zoomed in and out  several of these pics, concentrating on the logo and it indeed reads "NOKIA". Here are some photos from the post:

It cannot be said whether the screen is bigger than that of 5800 from this shot but it can be seen that 5900 has done away with the three hard buttons of 5800 and replaced them with soft buttons.  The front panel has been given a new jeweled look. In my personal opinion, the jeweled front panel is kinda girly unlike the unisex look of the front panel of 5800.

Lets see what the back panel of the phone looks like:

This model does look thinner than the 5800 from this angle. The back panel has also been given a new look but the camera lens aperture looks to be the same. I was expecting a larger aperture camera as this has been a major complaint with 5800. A high resolution sensor can only add some detail to the photos but what 5800 really lacks is an adequate lens aperture to capture sufficient light especially for indoors and artificial lighting shots. It seems like camera aperture has again been sacrificed for a sleeker look.

Another welcome change is the position of 3.5 mm jack and mini USB, which have been shifted to the rear end. In 5800, the fore end is fully packed with 3.5 mm jack, mini USB port, charger port and power button; which is not very convenient when you want to connect two or more than accessories at the same time.

Judging by the speculated specs and the above photographs, there hasn't been any major upgrade other than the  slightly larger screen and 5 Meg camera. What remains to be seen is how 5900 will be priced. One of the important factors for success of 5800 in the market has been its spot on pricing. Many experts speculated that Nokia has very competitively priced 5800 just to create a consumer base for its symbian 5th edition OS; using 5800 users as guinea pigs for fine tuning its first full (finger) touch screen OS. With N97 being their priced offering (which will be launched in US shortly), the timing of 5900 surfacing on internet is a bit surprising. Am sure not many very expecting a 5800 upgrade to be announced this early considering the fact that 5800 is still in the growth stage of its life cycle. At the moment am still keeping my fingers crossed as am very happy with my 5800 and the leaked pictures may as well be an exhibition of photoshop skills of the Chinese author.
