At last, a FREE converter!

Your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone is more than just a hi-tech gadget. It is a great platform to roll out meaningful applications. One such application that we recommend is the Converter Touch application brought to us by OffScreen Technologies.

What is the Converter Touch application?

The Converter application is a sleek program that lets you do conversion between two different units of measure specifically between the English and Metric methods of measurement (or vice-versa).

When you launch the application, the interface looks like a calculator with buttons from 0 to 9, a period and a “C” button meant to cancel a process. Above the screen, you will see different icons. These signify the different kinds of measurement that the converted can do. There are ten (10) different measurement types ranging from weight, temperature, length, time, speed and even energy. To choose which measurement type, just move it to the left or to the right with your finger.

Below that, you will see a big two layered display. This will be the “From” and “To” display. Beside the digits, you will find the unit of measure such as kilogram, meter or Celsius. You can change the unit of measure by touching the symbol (e.g kilogram=kg to gram=g).

At the upper left corner, you will see a big “I” which will pop the “About Us” window. At the upper right corner, you will see a big “X” which ends the application.

How to use the Converter Touch application?

First, choose which measurement are we going to convert. For example, let’s do weight. Choose the icon that looks like an iron weight. You will notice the display changing into familiar weight units. In my case, it is kilograms to pounds. Just type in the number using the calculator-like numeric keypad and Converter Touch will calculate the digits. So when I placed two (2) kilograms, it is about 4.41 pounds.

If you want to convert to another measurement type, just move your finger of the icons and choose. It’s that simple. Calculating that seven days has 168 hours is a breeze.

My take on the Converter Touch application

I love this application. At last, a free application that not only looks good but works. This application has a simple yet intuitive design and is polished in black and dark gray. It is very stylish.

The buttons are big enough to touch. The digits display is big enough for anyone to see it properly.

As far as the icons are concerned, unless you are familiar with it, you have to second-guess. It would have been nice to have at least a hovering text description when choosing.

I like it that this application can convert in different measurement types and measurement units. This is great for people who do conversion all the time such as engineers, carpenters and the like. The only thing that this app doesn’t do is convert exchange rates. But maybe OffScreen has an application like that in the future.

My verdict

I highly recommend this application. It’s FREE. It’s usable. It’s handy. It should be part of your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone’s arsenal of applications. You won’t go wrong getting this application.

I have been looking for such an application that can do almost any conversion. I don’t just look good but it works.
