iFlick is the application for Flickr fanatics.
Since its inception, Flickr has become one of the premiere sites to share personal photos and portfolio-worthy images. Also, it has spawned a community of sorts for different people, subjects, cultures and interests. With the mobile industry rapidly expanding with different internet, 3G and wi-fi capable handsets such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, one gets to wonder how Flickr can fit in all this. One person has taken upon himself (literally) to release a FREE application know as iFlickr.
According to the author (which until now I am trying to find out), he could not find an existing application for his Nokia 5800 phone that suits his Flickr needs. So he did what any person would do: he built his own application. The iFlickr is literally a product of necessity and hard work.
The Application
Upon launching the application, you are greeted with the iFlickr logo with the familiar colors scheme. The application asks you to “Allow connection to network?” This is import. If you reject it (No), then the application will not work. You have to be connected to a Wi-fi or via 3G. If you fail to connect to a network, restart the application and try connecting again. Once you are in, then you are brought to a simple Flickr interface. If you are not signed in yet, then do so. Please make you already registered to Flickr via a normal internet web browser before you use this application.
Tap on “Sign In” and log your username and password. Since Flickr is a Yahoo! Company, then your Yahoo! Email address and password will do. Inside, you will be shown an array of options that are found in Flickr such as “Recent Activity”, “Photos and Video from Contact” and “Comments you’ve made”.
Flickr photos in no time.
This is an amazing application. It permits you to upload your photos (and videos) to your Flickr account via your Nokia 5800. Just choose the option to upload, choose the file stored in your phone and press “Upload”. Just wait and your photo is now part of your online gallery. Then, put your image’s title, its description and if it is “Private” or “Public”. Please remember that you will be using bandwidth between Flickr and your phone. If you are using 3G, your network’s rates apply.
You can check out your photo stream or the photos you have uploaded. You can place comments on your photos or on other person’s photos. Are you looking for a particular picture? Just type it in the text box provided and choose either “Text” (which looks for the words in the titles) or “Tags” (which are clues associated with the image). The iFlickr application displays them on the screen together with a navigational pages system and the number of items associated with your word search.
My Insight
For Flickr aficionados our there, you will appreciate this application. You must download this. It will make your mobile Flickr life easier. The features are quite similar from the online version. The Upload feature is very straightforward and does its job well. Commenting is easy. Search is a no brainer. It is very powerful in my opinion.
Unfortunately, you can only upload one photo at a time. If would have been nice to upload at least five at a time. The application does not have the capabilities to put tags on the uploaded images, which you have to do via desktop. Would folders or galleries be another feature we need to see in the future? Maybe it will be very useful to all Flickr fanatics.
The Verdict
Uploading with iFlickr is easy
You cannot complain much about this application. The Flickr application does everything you need to do in uploading your mobile photos online. And just do some more fixing when you get home. Though it may have some lack on other features, it does not dampen my recommendation to have this application in your Nokia 5800.
I have also noticed the quick response time. The application does not have any fancy graphics, which makes us solely focused on the performance of the application.
You cannot be a mobile Flickr user without this.
The iFlickr application for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone can be downloaded for FREE here. If you wish to donate to the author, go right ahead.
