Nokia App: The Clicker

How many clicks does it take to command "Sit."?

Some dogs are trained to follow voice commands from their masters. Sit! Bark! Play dead! Other dogs are given commands via clicking sounds with the use of, what else, a clicker. The Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic phone has an application that work just like a dog clicker aptly known as “The Clicker”.

OffScreen Technologies created this “Clicker” application. The premise is quite simple: to use the 5800 as a clicker for dogs. Just like Morse code, certain commands can be given to dogs through a variation of clicks from the clicker.

Features:

When you launch the application, you will be shown a blue oval shaped device. There’s an image of a dog placed in the middle of the device and a bright yellow button above it. At the top left is the “I” icon that displays the “About the company” information screen when touched. At the top right is the “X” icon, which ends the application when pressed.

By instinct, you know that the big yellow button is what you are about to press. It’s pretty inviting, to say the least.

As you press this big yellow button, you will hear a “clicking” sound. Added with the vibrating feature of the phone, it adds realism. It is as if you are holding a real dog clicker.

The big yellow button plunges inside as you press it to give an effect that you are pushing it down. The response time is pretty accurate though there are certain delays sometimes. Then again, it could be the result of some other applications running with your phone.

Areas of Improvements:

Compared to the other applications done by OffScreen, there is not much practical use with this application. I don’t even know if this will work with real dogs. The sound is not as loud as you want it to be and it could drown when in an outside environment. You can barely hear the clicking sound.

Recommendation:

The Clicker is just a showcase of what the Nokia 5800 can do in terms of sound and graphics. Though there could be possibilities of improvement for this application or it can be a jumpstart to something more significant, this is more of a novelty item and not to be taken too seriously.

If you do have a dog that is trained with a clicker, I suggest you download this application and give it a go. Test if it does work. Let us know about it.

The Clicker application can be downloaded for FREE at the Ovi Store by registering on the site. You can also download this application directly to your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone by installing the Ovi Store application.
