Nokia launched Java Runtime 2.0 for Symbian S60

By Meraj Chhaya | June 30, 2009

Nokia - Java Runtime 2.0 for S60Nokia Beta Labs launched today, a few hours ago, the Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for Symbian S60 devices, having been tested only on the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, versions 20.x.xxx and 21.x.xxx and also on the two known versions of the Nokia N97, 10.x.xxx and 11.x.xxx. It is not yet known if it will exist one for Symbian S60 3rd edition, but the odds are good.

We have not yet tried this new Java mobile execution environment, but according to the Beta Labs it gives nice improvements in terms of usuability and performance, and it includes:

  • One-click application installation
  • Improved application launch user experience
  • Improved execution performance

This way it will be faster to download and install an application from any website or from the Ovi Store and to get the applications running smoother.

According to Nokia Beta Labs:

(...)we have made major changes under the hood. From now on, Java Runtime will be developed and released independent from S60 releases. This means that you will always get the latest version directly to your phone, using the built-in Nokia S60 Software Update functionality.

You can download the Java Runtime 2.0 for Symbian S60 here.

Download HERE link isn’t working. Eats a lot of memory, problematic. I’d stay away for now. I’m on a NAM 5800 with FW 20

all java applications are starting with a bothersome delay after installing java 2.0 beta. I’d stay away from it too, waiting for the final release.

I just installed the new Java run time on my Nokia 5800. Need to uninstall cuz of the the Opera Mini 4.2 problem. Can’t figure out how to uninstall. How did you do it?

  5. Roshann says:

    Stay away from this app.
I installed it and couldn’t access the log via the green button from home anymore.
And, I couldn’t use voice recognition anymore either. :(
    Had to hard reset.
If you experience it too, hard reset by :
Pressing the green, red and camera button together while starting up the phone.
The phone will hard reset with a password of 12435.

  11. SRV says:

very buggy nd irritating this update is..
all java apps getting installed to internal mem only..
no improvement in quality but takes longer to load…
more restricted access to various phone functionalities like read/write access etc..
keep away from this.. i’m unable to remove it now.. when i tried uninstalling, all apps went off.. nd then no new apps were installing..

  12. nice share but one thing can we use this for Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices like E71 ?

    Regards
