Is the Firmware Update v31.0.101 a big deal?

By Rodney Garcia | November 13, 2009

Maybe it slipped passed you but Nokia just recently updated the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s firmware to version 31.0.101. This has been a long time coming since it’s last firmware update dated July 2009.

Currently only available in Europe and Asia, this newest firmware update has included updates on your phone including an advanced e-mail application, a better version of Ovi Maps 3.0, an easier navigation experience, and bug fixes.

Frankly, there aren’t much graphical changes on this update unlike the previous update. It is claimed that there are bug fixes done which should always be part of any firmware update. Now to which bug fixes were resolved, Nokia did not specify it.

Also, it was mentioned that there is a more advanced e-mail application and Ovi Maps 3.0. Upon checking Ovi Maps, the interface does look cleaner and has great looking icons.

This is not the update everyone is waiting for. For months, Nokia 5800 users have been teased with the kinetic scrolling found in other Nokia units, which should have been part of the normal features of the Nokia 5800. Until now, we have not seen any trace of this kind on the updates.

Another feature we are waiting for is the appearance of widgets on the Nokia 5800’s main display, which is similar to the upcoming Nokia N900 phone due November 2009. What these widgets will do is similar to desktop widgets in Windows or Mac OS X. They will display different information such as time, dates and RSS feeds. However, with the 81MB internal memory of the Nokia 5800, this may be hard to pull. Having widgets present will eat up memory space and will affect the performance of your phone.

We are still in a wait and see mode. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Nokia didn’t forget one of their most sought after devices.

How to Update the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Firmware

Updating of your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s firmware can be done using the Nokia PC Suite via the USB cable or over the air Wi-Fi to your phone.

For Nokia PC Suite, download the application on this site and follow in the instructions. Go to http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update/download

For Over-the-air updates using Wi-Fi or your cellular Internet network, please go to your number keypad and type *#0000#. This will transport you to the Device Updates page where you will see the software version of your phone, the date and other vital information. You can also do the long cut version by tapping Settings > Device Updates. To update, simply choose “Options” then “Check for updates”. Your phone will connect via Wi-Fi or through your cell network. Once it detects the update, it will ask you if you want it done.

After the update, the phone will restart and will begin updating the firmware.

This update has been out for a few months, but incredibly, not for Nordic countries, at least not Norway. And here I was thinking Nokia was Nordic. Silly me.

  4. Tor says:

It is also still NOT availible in Sweden, or at least not on my phone. I’ve been trying to update for months but still nothing!

  5. stu says:

does not seam to be availible in the UK

  6. Per says:

Why isn’t the update available in Norway? Why won’t Nokia give an official statement on why someone must wait?

At least you guys are getting updates. I’ve been stuck on V21.x for a LONG time here in the states. It’s ridiculous how much they screw us over here in terms of firmware updates. I’m still waiting for all the improvements and also for my phone to stop tearing up sim cards.

Hi, I have downloaded this update about a month ago, changing the serial number of the phone.
I was stuck at firmware 21 here in Argentina, but now at firmware 31.0.101 the phone is more fast in game and general applications.
The only bugs i found is that the camera is very slow now, i mean, when you take a picture the phone shows you the preview, and if you click any button during the preview the phone will take some seconds to respond.
Other bug is if you take photos in a sequence the second photo you take will get corrupt, i mean, you have to take the photos with a little time between them.
And last, is that sometimes videos or photos from you gallery will get corrupt with not apparent reason. If you try to open the files on the PC they will open fine, but the phone can’t open them.
    Great site…
    Sorry for my english!! regards!

SORRY! the firmware that I installed on the phone is 31.2.008
I installed it more than a month ago, i’m trying to downgrade because Im losing videos and photos everyday. This bug was an isolated incident, but from 4 days ago im losing photos, the phone doesn’t save videos or photos that I take (I lost a lot of moments that I filmed with the phone), conects by itself to internet, the sensor is really sensitive, the “batery bar” some days show 1 bar only and the next day shows 4 without turning off the phone! and this sucks great!!
Now im trying to install firmware 31.2.101…
      Hope this help someone :(
      Regards
      Matt

The FW-upgrade is now available in Sweden! I have tried it for a week, but I can’t see ANY difference. Except that programs like the browser and emailreader now seem to have more bugs! I’m dissapointed! :(

    I’m unable to update.
On checking the net i find:

Latest available software for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, product code 0573797
    Version: 30.0.011
    Compare numbers
If this version is greater than your current software version, update now to get the latest features, applications and improvements.

  13. alexis says:

I’ve got the v31.0.101 for some time.
The major bug I’ve found until now is that text messages from my friends in other countries arrive and it doesn’t display their contact name, only the number (without the + sign!).
When I send them a message, it shows their names.
Weird stuff… getting ready to ditch my 5800, I’m freakin tired of all these bugs coming with the new firmwares.

  14. Chiller says:

After changing the product code to the Euro1 RED code I have managed to get the 31.xx firmware although I am disappointed!

The browser seems to crash more and there is no kinetic scrolling!

Im about to change the product code again to: 0586817 (Euro1) which will install the Navigation Edition firmware.

This will give a new home screen (like the one on the n97) and enable kinetic scrolling. I have also heard it will give unlimited access to Ovi Maps 3.0 :D

  15. mick says:

    Version: 31.0.101

  16. iwik says:

    Nokia 5800 kepunyaan saya, menjadi V 31.0.101.
dalmam penggunaan tentu saja langsung terasa perbedaannya, tampilan pada Map jelas menjadi sangat UI. tetapi untuk yang lainnya BIASA SAJAH.

  17. andy says:

31.. Upgrad is utter rubbish. I’m in uk. The phone has stopped pumping missed calls. Apps close all the time. Internet connection bad. Text messages not being pushed through. I have to send a text to myself to get my texts. How does one go back to v21? That was fine. Oh and problems with real player and just generally slower

  18. andy says:

lol pumping! Storing that should be. Predictive text at it’s best there
