Nokia 5800 App Review – Yamigo: A Free Instant Messaging and Presence Service

By Anunay Kumar | April 13, 2009

scr0000151Looking for an IM client for your Nokia 5800? Well, I haven’t found a single Symbian 5th Edition IM client that’s free. Yes, there are free J2ME clients available but they are really difficult to use on the Nokia 5800 Touch UI. But don’t worry, I have something you are going to love, just not because it’s free, also because it does not require any external client to be installed on the device. Please read further to know more.

In most of the Nokia mobiles including Nokia 5800, there is an inbuilt IM client that we never tend to use. This is mainly either because most of us think it is an operator based service or we don’t know about it.

We spend a lot of money buying IM applications to connect to the popular IM services on the move. Now, I can tell you a way through which you can get the internal IM client working within minutes and without any charges except for the data connectivity usage charges.

Before I continue, we need to understand as to what is IMPS. IMPS stands for Instant Messaging and Presence Service. This service enables instant messaging between the IM Provider’s (Yahoo, AIM, etc) server and the inbuilt chat cliescr000010nt on your phone. This service is provided free of cost by Yamigo.

Yamigo currently provides free connectivity with the Yahoo, Aim, Icq and MSN instant messaging services. To use the free service you need to first open an account on Yamigo. Then you need to setup the IM services you wish to use by providing your username and password. The Yamigo account would be your primary account with which you will configure the Nokia IM client.

To configure the client, you will find all the information on the Yamigo site itself. It would not list the Nokia 5800 but you can use the settings for any other Nokia phone. Please find the settings here.

I have tested this service on my Nokia 5800 phone and it works fine. The greatest advantage is that it allows a multi client chat i.e Yahoo, Aim, Icq and MSN, all at the same time.

So what are you waiting for, visit Yamigo and get your free IMPS account.

  2. Russ says:

fring supports 5800 and nimbuzz is coming. the beta test is over. IM+ is another one. Ebuddy works too..and these have gmail support. fring even supports calling through internet. Moreover yamigo does not work in every place. however its good to know we have service in built in the phone.

i am using fring on nokia 5800.but it does not work on slower connections.it needs a minimum 3g connection to work.the connection would time out on a gprs connection.for nimbuzz and ebuddy have released the java version.they dont have a s60 5th edition yet.in these cases Yamigo is a better option except it doesn’t support gmail.for gmail you may be able to use the jabbes server access with the inbuilt im. Its jabber. Find jabber settings on the google site.

  5. sajinseethi says:

fring works well on gprs. i use it on gprs and wifi. it rarely disconnects. You can also try IM+ and slick messenger. They have gmail support as well.

I have downloaded and installed FRING, but it keeps disconnecting me b4 it finishes downloading my msn contacts.. can you provide some advise on this? what am i doing wrong?

  7. the cyber freek says:

i’ve a nokia 5800 and use fring in it. fring works brilliantly and the best part is it supports most of the Im services (msn, yahoo, aim, gtalk, skyp etc). not to mention its support for voice calls, which is ideal for talking to all ur IM contacts and especially those on skype.

so far, this is the best free IMing app i’ve found for a mobile device.

  8. Anunay says:

IM+ and Slick are not free, they have a limited period functionality. I have used the trial and it has now expired on my mobile. I am currently using Nimbuzz as my GPRS is quite slow and Fring does not connect on it.

  9. sajinseethi says:

ya, i know they r not free which is y i said try im+ and slick. anyway ebuddy works well..but they r a little dodgy to use. But if fring doesnt work, then u r stuck with it if u want gtalk support.
